I bought a used 700R4 tranny to use with a 350 TBI motor swap and figure since I don't know anything about the tranny's past life I should go through it before I waste all the time getting it into the truck. So what does anyone reccomend for a rebuild kit? Looking for a pretty complete kit. Any advise or ones to stay away from, don't really wanna pay someone so I thought I would give it a go with Toytechs help. Thanks

Check out December 2001 Petersen's 4wheel page 106, nice little article about what it takes to do it yourself...

The best rebuild kit I've ever seen is the B & M Transkit. The instructions are unbeliveable with large clear pictures. Figure around $200 at Jeg's,Summit etc. Be sure and clean it beforehand. Take your time during assembly and did I mention above all else it HAS to be clean!! Most Transkits come with optional instructions to increase the oiling. I would do it and after crossdrilling the shaft. I would clean it. Don't try to do this on the floor of the garage. Build a quick bench from 2x4's and 3/4 inch plywood. Keep it clean & you can do it!!

BTT...
hewl35: Have you used the B&M Transkit? Is it a complete O/H kit, or just an upgrade/shift improver kit?
I can source a complete O/H kit from a local trans. parts shop for $110. The couter dude assured me that it would already contain the neccessary parts to upgrade calfj60's older 700R-4 to the later, improved design. I'm skeptical though :D
Comments anyone?
I've never gone through a 700R-4, but I once watched a guy overhaul a TH350  Toyota A T/Ms are my deal, so I'm venturing into uncharted territory here...Thanks!

Yes I've used the Transkit before. B & M calls them their transmission in a box. Everything in the "built" trans selling for 800 to 1500 or so in that box. You are saving yourself labor & some shipping cost. I had never rebuilt a transmission before and just followed the instruction book. That's right the instruction book not go a buy a overhaul manual. The instruction book is unbelievable. The shift improver kit is just part of the kit. After installing the kit the only thing different to remember is putting Ford type fluid instead of Dexron due to metallic clutches (great for high heat and long wear). Getting ready to do another TH400 for the 725. 700's just have more parts & do anything the intructions tell you to improve oiling.
Dont forget to keep it clean when you assemble it.
