BJ On Roids 02-18-2002, 09:59 PM okay, i have been told this is the ideal winch for my car and want to buy a second hand one

?????
mission
so how do i know if its good or not?
and what parts do i need to make sure that i get with it?
you know cbales and stuff?
remote switch? ummmm i dont really know
any help would be great thanks
rob
Just hook it up and see if it runs, if it runs its worth minimum US $300-400 in the US even if its in bad shape. New the 8274 costs about $1100. Some people say its the best Warn winch out there in the under-10k class. Is there a Warn parts distributor down there? Warn backs all their winches with advice and reasonably priced replacement parts so you can keep it running forever and it's not very hard to work on them. Here's the warn site http://www.warn.com/InternetHome/ and you can search the various tech forums for articles on winch refurbishment - I know there's a good article on the warn 9000 series but I can't find the address right now. I think I've seen one on the 8274 too.
Oh yeah, there's a trick to seeing if it runs. Not certain of the 8274 but on the M8000, at least, you can't just hook up the positive and negative battery cables - the solenoid pack has to be connected to the winch casing because apparently it uses the mount for a ground.
Cutter 02-19-2002, 07:01 AM okay, i have been told this is the ideal winch for my car what kind of 'car' ya gonna hang it from? :flipoff2:
Arnold 02-19-2002, 07:31 AM I was gonna ask the same question.:D

Where are you shopping? Advance Auto (C/S/K for all you Cali kids) LISTS the 8274 for $838.
Cutter 02-19-2002, 10:59 AM if its cheap, buy it! if it don't work, it's probably just a selinoid. Cheap to replace....now back to my important q...what car are you going to hang off?
TNToy 02-19-2002, 11:00 AM but they've been made for decades. An original model with a tired motor, covered in grime, ain't worth $800.
BJ On Roids 02-19-2002, 01:09 PM thanks 92xj, im doing that now!!! :thumbs up:
ummm cutter and all you others, i drive a bj42, its written in my sig. you may not be familiar with it, its also my user name its uhh, like a fj40, but its got a diesel and its released from 1980 to 1984
front discs, 5 speed, other pretty bits like carpet and stuff power steering, air conditioning.
basically its a fj40, so what do i look out for?
One thing to check out...... If you BJ40 is 24 volt........ you will likely have to get a new motor from Warn.
The 8274 is as close to bulletproof as you will find.
the remote control is not an issue.. there are only two styles (4 pin-metal plug, 5pin plastic plug..)
Even the wiring diagrams were posted on the site a while ago
The only maintenance problem I ever had on mine was the freewheel release shifter frozen up. took out the four little capscrews and replaced it (took about 5 minutes)
BJ On Roids 02-19-2002, 01:19 PM we're all 12V in OZ!! so no worries there CRO
also yota_san
its got a 4.6HP motor, so it mustnt be too old!
i think...
thought that was the newer motor

ummm i went to the site and cannot find a link to any forums or stuff, but i saw some int4eresting info on the new winches, and how to mount them and stuff, and that it is the right winch for my car, now ive gotta figure out what to look out for, damage wise and stuff, and whether it'll be worth the $1000 australian, the guy is asking, they normally go for around the $800 mark, in GC but i may be able to get it down to that.... i dunno

"knock, knock- hello pants?" *ha ha*:flipoff2:
oi, 'roids :D how goes it, mate.
FC-101 in background?
BJ On Roids 02-19-2002, 03:16 PM hey uzi!!!!
pity about the GS board hey!!
that thing in the background is a MK V international ACCO, ex-army job, with 48" tyres and stuff, fairly cool 6x6 rig, gets a 4.5L 6cylinder, very reminiscent of the 2F, maybe the 2F even copied it.
thats a tipper version but where i work they have flatbeds, tippers, tankers, cranes, the whole bit for working on beaches and islands around the coast here!!
as for knocking my pants :flipoff2: ;)
*muffled voice* hello...this is bj's pants, how are you doing */muffled voice*
now help me out, what do i lookout for when buying a second hand winch??
ive searched extensively and had no joy :(
any webpages that could help me on things to look out for?

Yep, the refurb info isn't on Warn's site, it's probably on one of these sites:
http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/bryce/tcase/tcase.cfm
http://www.genxj.com/archive.htm

but it might not be. I'll keep an eye out for that 8274 article I think I saw, but you can try these links if you want while I'm looking.
On the price, $1000 AUD is like $550 in real dollars, right? (what, me a bigoted American?) That's starting to sound pricy to me unless its in great shape, except I don't know how to adjust for OZ versus US. I don't know why winches would be more expensive there but maybe they are. The $1100 I quoted is list price but sclemons says its being discounted to $850 or so. See whats the best quote you can get locally for a new one. Seems to me you ought to get it half price or less used or you're better off going new.
BTW, those "pants" of yours look a lot like kilts, only I thought that was those other crazy english-speaking people somewhere else in the world. It's hard to keep you all straight, what with driving on the wrong side of the road and buying gas tanks with the wrong size gallon and all. :D
UZI 9mm 02-19-2002, 04:21 PM you could also try
http://4wheeldrive.about.com/cs/winches/ (http://www.4wheeldrive.about.com/cs/winches/)
i dunno, site may be :rainbow: (:D ) but ya never know....
good luck:beer:
Land Crusher 02-19-2002, 04:44 PM I wonder if harbor freights free shipping
would still be good if he ordered a ramsey.
ps I agree shoot for 50% of cost of new.
BJ On Roids 02-19-2002, 09:38 PM uzi...too much advertising
92xj thansk ive looked through and found nothing real decent :(
dunno what landcrusher is talking about!
i typed a response here this morning, in response to xj's it mustve got deleted by me ???
anyways we measure in litres over here:flipoff2:
our dollar buys some 52c US!!
our winches 8274-50th are around $3k new LIST
but everyone gets them cheaper, plus i think our government like to tax the A$$ off anything remotely car related (its all luxury items) so attracts large amounts of tax.....
B@$t@rd$!!!!

or just:
ITS A TOYOTA!!! what you reckon?
hmmm, now to figure out how to do it...damn newbie that i am!!
Here they are, they weren't on that list after all. I've got too many lists scattered about. The one on the 8274 says "to be continued" but I never found page 2 - you can email him at his site though. Also, his 8274 looks pretty old, I think that model has changed a good bit over the years. Check out his truck too, he's got a Rover-based kit-car-type thing called a Foers Ibex.

BJ On Roids 02-20-2002, 01:23 PM hmmm, some old pics of one, and stuff......
its sorta not what im after!!
if i just hook it up and it all works, then am i good to go?
aswell as make sure i get a remote, and a good cable, then it should be sweet right?
is there an easy way to check gearbox and brake condition?
i bought my 8274 from a pawn shop for 475. took it to a friend of mine who runs a motor rewind shop to check it out. the motor was dead shorted. took it back and the guy asked me how much for a new motor. i called Warn and they quoted me 225. the guy sold it to me for 200. installed the new motor (4.6hp) and it works perfectly. so basically around 400 or less would be doable any more and i would want a warranty of some kind. good luck
