: Some Colorado wheeling...
squirrelman83 02-18-2002, 10:04 PM Made a run to a trail called Chinaman's Gulch. Really fun trail. Nothing as hard as some of the stuff Chris posts, but hey, it's wheeling. Couple of pics...

Don't be fooled by the strap, it was just a couple of guys holding the front end down. Ugly line that was really steep. Only two rigs made this line, a TJ and me. :D

More pics will be coming when I get film developed and more people send me their pics (just about everybody had a camera). Here's a few more until then: http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=4292032975 . Enjoy. :) ~Steve

It's called snow. Apparently they get that up North, or something.
zukstur 02-19-2002, 10:53 AM good pics squirrelman. nothing wrong with protecting your investment with a strap, the guys in arca do it all the time.
squirrelman83 02-19-2002, 01:48 PM Thanks, guys. Yup, that's snow. It was trying to snow most of the day, but it was just to warm to stick. :) ~Steve

You're gonna love the new suspension! This is my second run with the TT set-up and it has performed flawlessly. Worth every penny! Can't wait to see your's out on the trail, too. :) ~Steve

I'm still waiting for my film. It should be done on Friday just because it takes them longer to put them on a disk. These are from the guys with the digicam's.
No toy axles (yet). I'm still running stock ones for now. Probably gonna get some birfield rings and then just wait till they break and replace the axles. I'll definitely be putting the stockies to the test in Moab in April. :D ~Steve
markmo 02-20-2002, 06:59 AM There was a group that was going to head up there is weekend but we wasnt sure of the snow. Looks like we might have to make a go for it. Thanks for the information and the pics.

Go for it! There was only a tiny bit of snow in one, maybe two, little areas. All the obstacles are clear from snow, though. You should be fine. Good luck! ~Steve
EMIEVEL 02-20-2002, 08:38 PM Mr. Squirellman, is there any good wheelin' around Ledville in late July?

Heck yeah! There's a trail called Holy Cross about 30 minutes out of Leadville. Probably the most entertaining trail I have been on in Colorado. Really fun and there is lines from average to tough on most all the obstacles. Can ya tell it's my favorite trail??? :D Some info: http://www.4x4trails.net/db_view_trail.asp?trailNum=63 Let me know when you come, maybe my club can guide you guys up there. ~Steve
EMIEVEL 02-20-2002, 09:41 PM I'll let you know exactly when I'll be there. I'll be there for about a week and would like to do a lot of wheelin. My friend is having a family reunion, I'm just going for the trails!
I read about that trail and they said somthin about big tires. I'm locked up f/r but only have 32's, I should be okay, right?
I definately would like to hook up with your club. I'm sure someone will be able to wheel during the week. Are there more trails in that vicinity?
canzuk 02-20-2002, 10:09 PM A friend and I are planning a trip up to Colorado! End of may or early June. Any Idea of the travel time to this trail from Calgary or even the border. THank Clayton
aaronlosey 02-21-2002, 01:34 PM thats a cool trail, i ran it about a year ago. the best part is crossing the prison property and going through the gates. if your lucky, you will pass a work detail with armed gaurds. kinda funny.

You should be fine with your set-up. When we went, there was a group of guys in front of us with Land Rover Discovery's with like 31's that did all the obstacles (except the last, optional one). You shouldn't have a problem at all. You could probably do the last obstacle, too, Cleveland Rock. I did. :D
As far as other trails, there are a bunch that are within about an hour or hour and a half. Seems like everything is about that far away in Colorado (from where I live, anyway).
Let me know when you are headed out here and I'll try to show you around a bit. I'll see if I can round up some more Zuk guys, too. ~Steve

Sorry, not sure of travel time. All I know is that it is about 2 1/2 hours from my town. :D ~Steve
tZUKnami 02-21-2002, 04:47 PM Squirlman, You went with DT shocks right? So how are they working out and what did you end up doing for mounts?

Yup, I went with DT8000 prerunners (built in bumpstops); model 8368 to be exact. Frankly, I LOVE EM! This was my second run with the new suspension/shocks and it has performed flawlessly. Can't say enough good things about 'em.
For mounts, the front lower is custom. I just took a 1/2" bolt (3" long, I think) and cut the head off. Then it got welded to the top of the u-bolt plate facing the tire. I used a washer on each side to hold the shock on. For front uppers, I used Ford shock towers. The top of the towers touch the top of the fender well, so they are as high as I can get them without them cutting the fender well.
For rears, I went with Spidertrax stuff. The rear upper mounts the shocks in at and angle. I also used the rear lowers and welded them to the front of the axle. I don't come close to using up the full travel of the rear shocks. I need to put some lock-tight on the rear bolts that hold the shock uppers on, though, as they seem to come loose after runs.
I am very statsified with the new set-up. I max out the front shocks (but not by too much), but they are the perfect length as far as compression goes. I was worried when I first installed them due to the bumpstop (looked like it wouldn't have any up travel), but it gets compressed nicely. If I had to do it again, I would do the same thing.
Okay, I'm done with my novel. :) ~Steve
