When you narrow a front or rear axle, how far can you narrow it so you can still use the stock shafts, without buying new, custom shafts? Or if you narrow at all, do you have to buy custom shafts?
I'm talking about a D60 front and rear, and a 14bff and a d70 rear
thanks.

searched and all I found was people were buying new shafts.
So no matter what, I have to buy new shafts custom made to fit. Or else get a local machine shop to respline them (although they would lose there strength from the heat)

what I have seen alot of people do is take an axle that has an offset diff, and shorten it so both axleshafts are equal in length. then just use two of the stock shorter side shafts.

you can also just go to the JY and pick thru shit til you find somethin you need :flipoff2:

Depending on what you narrow and how much you narrow it you can find other vehicle applications that use a shaft of the length you need.

For example, narrow a Chevy front 44 by 4" and you can use the long side shaft from any '80-91 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer.

I'm too friggin lazy to look but there was a post within the last week or so that had a link to oem axle lengths. It might have been refering to the bible or something from BellaVista.

Don't remember which post but search is your friend.

Here's the link to Warn's website that's got axles shaft length and spline count: http://www.warn.com/truck/axles/axles_all.shtml

The reason why noone shortens the housing and reuses the shafts without resplining is that you would only be able to lose *maybe* 3/4" on each side. It's a lot of shitty work getting the inner c's off and cutting the tube down and way too much for an axle that's only 1" shorter. As others have said, you can sometimes find other stock shafts that will work for your width.
