: NV4500 Spline count; 2wd version in '92?

I've got a line on a '92 GM NV4500 and I'm going to pair it with an Atlas.

Does anybody know what the spline count on the tranny output for these was? 21 or 23? Need to know before I order a T-case.

Also, was this transmission offered in 2wd form in 92? The stupid parts monkey doesn't know if it's a 2wd or 4wd and although I know they can be converted, I'd rather not piss around with a 2wd...

Thanks,

Jake

yes they were availible in 2wd's and I think the spline count is 29, I have a '97, I know they changed the gear ratio and the bolt pattern but I think the splines remained the same.

depending on what you're mating it up to, you'll most likely have to awap-out the tailshaft anyway.

--yes, the did offer the 92 NV4500 in 2wd..

Thanks Sherpa...

Just one question: I was under the impression that since I was ordering a NEW Atlas, they could just build it with an input gear to match the tailshaft on the tranny... I haven't ordered the Atlas yet because I need to know the tailshaft spline count so AA can install the input gear in my new Atlas to match the spline count of my 92 (hopefully 4wd) NV4500.

They said it would be either 21 or 23 but Andy said he thought it was 29 and now you're saying (unless I misunderstand) that I'm gonna have to swap the tailshaft no matter what...

I'm confused... :rasta:

Could someone please explain where I went so horribly wrong with my life? ;)

Thanks,
Jake

don't know if you life's going too wrong, but I belive in 92 you should have the hella low geared 4500 (6.something:1) instead of the later model (5.something:1) version. I could be wrong on that though, cuz auto's rule. :D :D

All GM 2wd mainshafts have 35 splines (according to the AA NV4500 reference...great investment BTW). AA makes no adapters that couple to this mainshaft.

Also, even if they make an Atlas with a 35 spline input gear, you will need a new tailhousing, and THEN it all depends on if the spline end of the mainshaft lines up with (distance from rear of case) the tailhousing you need.

The best use for this tranny, as is, would be in front of a divroced case.

Or you can change the mainshaft and the tailhousing. This is the route I've taken, I found a great deal on a 93 commercial GM 2wd.
The tailhousings (Dodge 4wd) can be found for about $100 used.
And the shaft can be found for $2-500.

That 6.34:1 first is definitely a plus, and it's synchronized (contrary to popular belief), it's the reverse that isn't in these early GMs.

The NV4500s started in 93, but I'm sure some were available in mid 92.

Thanks Charly,

I'll only buy it if it is a 4wd version. I'm trying to find out what the tailshaft spline count would be IF it was a 92 4wd version. If it's a 2wd I'm not going to bother with it.

Does anyone know what the spline count would be if it was a 92 4WD?

I have a '92 NV4500 4wd version. I was just in the process of tearing it apart. I will count them up later and let you know.

They are 32.

Most of AA's adapters for it, say they cut the mainshaft and there is a 31 spline section under a balancer that they mate too.

And, just for the record, the title of the post states you are looking for the count for a 2wd.

I meant it as two separate questions... Sorry to confuse.

Thanks,
