: Attn: tube rig owners
Just got a few questions...
1. How are you dealing with the windshield issue? Are you making a frame and having custom cut glass/plexi installed? No windshield at all?
2. Heaters - do you even need one where you are, or what are you doing for heat?
3. What about the firewall - brake M/C mounting, pedal handers, etc?
Just wun'drin' :)
GloNDark 02-19-2002, 11:17 AM My buddies got a tube "Thing" in the works. I will get some pics tonight if he is home.
Windshield - Plexi glass with tabs built into the windshield frame to hold it. I think the plexi is 1/2" that he scored.
Heater - he got an aftermarket heater core/blower set up which is pretty damn trick.
Firewall - He is using some aluminum diammond plate I think it's 3/8" not sure. Looks pretty damn trick. But still kind looks like a tube "Boat" ;)

1. right now my windshield is a pair of goggles. works great !
2. i may put a heater in in the future but for now i bought my wife a set of carhart coveralls and a benie
3. firewall is a PITA. lots of time fabing it up. thats why alot of the guys use the stock firewall. mine is all fabbed and it is cooler when done just more work.
Here's my thought....
I have an old CJ body. Graft the firewall, dash, and windshield assembly into the tube rig. Takes care of the windshield (even folds down), dash, and firewall issues....
How's that sound?

That's what I am planning on doing with the cruiser. Since the tub is pretty rusted and starting to get trashed but the firewall and windshield frame is still in good shape.
my thoughts........windshields just break.
ryanwhit 02-19-2002, 12:37 PM if the window breaks, seems to me that you could cut it out or just unbolt it, have no window or build a new frame for plexi, but your firewall prob would be fixed.
gunracer1 02-19-2002, 12:52 PM well i have been running my rig for a year with out a windsheild and i can say it sucked. it is kick ass on the trail, but driving to the trail head was misserable. in colorado this past summer, i froze my ass off every morning and evening. my junk is street legal, but the only time i drive it out of the neighbor hood is to go wheeling. except last year i drove it to the kids school to pick them up on the last day. yea i was the coolest dad in the parking lot. i just made a removable plexiglass windsheild this past weekend and its great, just wish i had done it sooner. what suprized me is how well the heater works even with out a windsheild or doors. it makes a hell of a differance. hell i even used my air this year in moab when it was 108 in july. just pointed the duct at my face, the kids were still complaining in the back but you can't have everything.

I'm not a buggy owner yetbut
this is my plan:
Start with a Cj-5 frame and body. Cut the tub at the front of the doors.(using the firewall and floor) Use the hood and grill. No outer fenders. No front glass or window frame. Enough tube to hold it all together and make it safe:D looking into 1/4 elliptic rear and adding as much to the wheelbase as possible.

I like the idea.
Your not going to cut up your wifes Scrambler are you??:D
dirtrod 02-19-2002, 03:39 PM I'd build a custom firewall that can be removed easily for access , .063" alum. is plenty thick.
Lexan or a flat glass windshield attached to the cage (removable)
Attach all the other stuff to the cage with small tube and tabs. (again make it easy to remove).
TheNerple 02-19-2002, 07:49 PM Well i got a fire wall that is toyota so I didn't have to fab it. I don't have a windshield and there are positives and negatives to it. I took out the wiper motor and blades so if I did have windshield it would just get all grimey then I would be stuck with a dirty windshield. They break when you roll, they glare when you are going into the sun light with tree sap on it. I snow wheel mine in the winter and I just use my snowboarding goggles or a full helmet. When you go 30 mph in the snow your face starts to hurt and your eyes water like mad, or maybe I am just crying cause I wish I had a windshield at those times! ahahaha Anyway I have the stock toy heater and I love it. I took a couple of drier hoses and hooked them up to my box and I just stuff the hose in my jacket or pants and it keeps me damn warm! Just my .02
Cutter 02-19-2002, 08:19 PM do a lexan (or Speed Glass) firewall, it's all about the view:smokin:

Project in the works. Will have no windshield.
2. Heaters - do you even need one where you are, or what are you doing for heat?
Will have no heater. Relatively mild here in Phoenix.
3. What about the firewall - brake M/C mounting, pedal handers, etc?
Am fabbing a firewall from aluminum sheet. Brake parts hung from tubing structures and misc. bracketry (some scavenged and grafted). The sheetmetal work is kinda a PITA.

yagernc 02-19-2002, 09:12 PM 1) windshield - personal choice, but its fun to watch the guys that dont have em on the road, all crying and filthy from the dusty dirt roads. The helmet idea is the way to go !
2) heater - heat is a nice thing.......
3) firewall - but a pedle plate from any circle track mag. (or aa-mfg.com ) and hang a dual master + clutch if you need it, then use a basic bolt on pedle setup, again from catalog. (use kind with balance bar for f/r biasing) Hang sterring column on whatever is close. After that the firewall is up to you,. just skin it with alum.

ppillard 02-19-2002, 09:29 PM Hey Gunracer,
That new tubing you got up front looks sweet. 'Bout time you got you some new meats, too. Last time I saw that 'yota (at the afore-mentioned colorado trip, you didn't have of your new mods. Looks good!
