DB :D
psychotoy 03-14-2005, 02:35 PM Rockcrawling needed a mag like XOM, it is making good drivers/ spotters get some well deserved attention, as well as companies that sponsor our ever growing sport, I've met a lot of the drivers from Judging CALROCS events, now I see them in the the mag and I'm like "dude I met that guy", not only that, I'm sick of certain mags that spend countless pages on gay ass shit like IFS lift kits and testing SUV's :)and 4wheelparts ads.
Plus it is written with a sense of humor, I was laughing reading the new issue yesterday when under the pic it said "nice blankie", oh, BTW stop doggin' toys using winches!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: for the best mag on the planet :D
MO_4RUNNER 03-14-2005, 05:00 PM What stores can i buy an issue in? Or is it just available online?
xtremeoffroadmag.com 03-14-2005, 09:10 PM In your state (I cannot even spell it :flipoff2: ) it is only by subscription that I know of. it is in 7-11 and other stores in California and in book stores soon, maybe even this issue. I do not get a report of exactly what stores it is i, only what areas it sells to and how many. 2500 went to L.A. I know, beyond that i am still waiting to hear back!
Tony - you'll have mail :grinpimp:
Jeff Knoll 03-14-2005, 09:13 PM The most kick ass mag I have ever read. All you guys need is a few slutty models hanging all over the cars now and then so people won't think I'm a freak for getting wood when I read it. The waterfall pics are the sh!t.

I Received All My New Magazines Last Week. 4 Wheel, Petersens, Ect. I Havent Touched One Of Them And I Have Read Yours Front To Back At Least 3 Times. Awesome Mag Guys.
coilcj 03-23-2005, 12:52 PM Still waiting in NJ, the suspense is killing me!!!!!
Rock Toy 03-23-2005, 01:36 PM Well, here's my honest opinion. I received my mag yesterday and sat down to read it cover to cover. The pics are awesome and I love the fact that it focuses on the extreme. However, my opinion of the mag totally changed after reading the last page. There is a story towards the end that is written by OG. In my opinion, he is an arrogant, self_absorbed asshole and I can't beleive you allowed the story to go to print. He brings absolutely nothing to the sport and detracts from the positive image that the sport should be trying to pursue. Here he is saying that people that are trying to help and/or praise him are idiots and don't belong on the trail. Gimme a break :mad3: To me, he comes off as being a bully that has no time for anyone that's not on his level (which is probably not that high anyhow) and scoffs those that look up to him. Hope I never read something like that in print again...
Other than that, good mag and I look forward to getting the next one. I prefer to read about a nice group of guys that are willing to spend a day taking you out for some wheeling like the SNORT boys. Never in a million years could I imagine thoughts or words like those that OG spewed out coming from Jason or Trevor....two of the nicest and most helpful guys on any trail.

Yeah, it's not so bad now (got #2 yesterday), but I have flashbacks of a few years ago when Petersen's had Shannon Campbell in practically every issue, and that was before competition rock-crawling even existed. Y'all are doing a lot of stuff right such as:
*Showing the scores from the comps
*Going out of your way to get pics of the WINNERS
*High quality (and quantity) on the pics
*complete lack of poser type rigs
That said, keeping it fresh will become a challenge as more & more issues go to print. Straight from Laurie's editorial, you want to feature "rock crawling and hardcore wheeling". You're going to have to incorporate more of that non-rock "hardcore" stuff. I'd say at least one article a year covering Formula Off-Road in Iceland would be a nice start. Maybe some Gravelrama coverage. And yes, (you knew this was coming ;)) mud. On the rock scene, you'll have to incorporate more of the local events; those not sanctioned by the "big 3" in order to show some rigs most of us would otherwise never even know about. You just have to be certain that they're quality events so as not to lose credibility (like the other mags do when they cover "mud" events that are more drunk-fests than actual competitions). Y'all did a nice job mixing things up with the trail events. But, if you're going to cover 4 or 5 comps in a single issue, you may need to have one of those be some event that features none of the "normal" rock-crawling crowd - or even one event that features no rocks whatsoever.
TEX
Thump 03-27-2005, 06:10 PM I'll give you my views, and then the ones of the folks we've shown it to around the shop...
I like it, I like it a lot :)
I like that you did the whole "random pics and funny captions" part we had talked about... even if it may have already been in the mix.
The coverage is great, the Money Shot is awesome Framed is a kick ass section, too
I also like the style of writing... more down to earth, and unrestrained (just wait till Primedia or other big house buys you out and see where the censor sticks his hand up the puppet ass that all writers become in those scenarios)
All in all... just what I need to get my fix on the more extreme side of life.
Around the shop, and at my day job...
Folks are amazed. Terms like "Holy shit", "Oh my God", "Awesome" and "Where can I get a copy" were most common.
One of the odd comments that we all made around our copies, and the folks we so nicely allowed to peruse the pages had to say "Man, that is a good, quality paper they're using. It probably won't rip when you're trying to turn pages (when slump-drunk and showing off some badd ass stunt you witnessed at a run or comp - inner-voice of Glenn)"
Great jobs Guys and Gal. Glad I subscribed.
One thing I noticed, though... you ran with the AirForce buggy, and mentioned it all throughout the article. Yet the only pic I can see of it is from a distance. Oh well :)
Chaz Murray 03-27-2005, 06:55 PM got mine last thursday...but this issue for the 2nd time got my name spelled wrong on the scores for the last calrocs event in beatty....not like it really matters..but just found it kinda funny   but other than that...it was great
crawlmag 03-27-2005, 11:41 PM Chaz talk to Lil Bitch... we get the scores and ames directly from him.....
air force buggy will be a full feature very soon, hang tight... we will be there when they present it to the air force as a gift for recruiting....

Famous potato 03-28-2005, 08:45 AM Gonna piss somebody off but I like spotter ropes. I think we will see more spotter injuries without them. At K-ROCKS when a team tries a course without the strap the spotter is nearly always on the downhill side of the rig especially if the driver side is on the down side. With the rope at least they are where the rig is not going to be in a rollover. I think the coure designers should change their thinking. When you set up a course where the spotter is out of site on the other side of an obstical where the driver has to have 30 mph wheel speed to launch over an hill, change it. The Matterhorn is a classic example of that. Where is the safe place for the spotter in that situation? On the blindside where the rig is going to launch over, top of the small hill where they are comming at 30 mph, or on the ground behind the rig where most of them are going to land?
Set up some rules for the rope like never be directly in front of the rig etc. But don't drop the rope change the cones.
BTW love the 2nd issue. Cept for the rope thang.

If that's a dangerous place to be, outlaw being there.

Out in the crowd somewhere I guess. Again, gotta have safe zones & it's not going to be the same for every obstacle. Point is to not put the guys directly in harm's way, whether that be in front of a rig getting a run at an obstacle, downhill from one that's about to roll, or dangling from a strap in a precarious situation.

rbaer 03-28-2005, 05:27 PM I wouldn't have sounded like the whiney bitch (that I am) if you guys got pictures of ALL the winners in #1......Gotta hang out with Randy more, I guess.
BTW, my wife left a voice mai msg with the new shop address...is it too late to get #2? Gotta have it, all the cool kids do.
crawlmag 03-29-2005, 10:48 AM As far as creating zones where spotters cannot be, the sport is not ready for that yet. It would require very well trained and consistant judges and what we have so far is inconsistant volunteers. They do their best but they cannot be held responsible for a 3-dimensional plane on which ropes can and cannot be used, too complex. If they are at the back of the rig, how do they know if that rope crossed the illegal plane? They can't see everything.
rbaer, just got back from Moab, I'll check voicemail...
rbaer 03-29-2005, 04:52 PM Thank you.
Po' riggity 03-29-2005, 10:54 PM I agree 100000000% with this. I just finished reading that page, since I was reading here about it, and I decided to go out to my truck, get the mag, and read the article from OG. I will tell you this. I will be continuing the subscription, but the first thing I will do is rip the article by OG out. Waste of my time, and IMHO, you guys don't need an arrogant A-hole writing crap like that for you.
Scott
flexj 03-30-2005, 05:05 AM This is the first off road mag that I read cover to cover. The 'others' are just skimmed for the pertinent info and the crap is disregarded. The quality of the photos is excellent and the writing isn't half bad either. I like the sticker too :D. Is there a contingency program if we run the sticker and place in the top 3 at a comp?
Keep up the good work. I don't know how it could be any better.
Hamy.

I don't know, I read it & I think he has some valid points. I mean who among us hasn't found ourselves in a precarious situation & as a result received all kinds of bad unsolicited advice? Worse, when you ask one specific guy for help & half a dozen others are shouting conflicting advice. Perhaps OG did come off as arrogant, but that doesn't mean he was wrong.
TEX
crawlmag 03-30-2005, 11:40 AM I stumbled a few times on some of the sentence structure, but I'm trying to get used to the writing styles.
We're working with a new copy editor now and this will not be a problem in future issues. I too was a little dissapointed in the SC3 article but under time constraints I ran what we had.
Waste of my time, and IMHO, you guys don't need an arrogant A-hole writing crap like that for you.
I think you're missing the point. OG is a character that we created, he is meant to come across like that and get you fired up. You're talking about the article and him as a writer, are you not? So it worked. I think he is funny and often correct at the same time. It is a parody, I mean watch Saturday Night Live sometime and see how they over-exaggerate George Bush's manerisms on purpose to be funny, so it is with OG. I his two articles thus far hit on two valid concepts, both involving safety on the trail. We could just copy/paste OSHA safety manuals in there but OG is more fun :flipoff2:
rbaer 03-30-2005, 12:00 PM Got it Rbaer, I'll kick a copy out tomorrow.....
Now that makes me feel good. Wonder if I'll get the same response from Dirt Sports......
Mel85CJ 03-30-2005, 01:03 PM I would have LOVED to see more on the Modified guys.
Loved the mag, bought it at moab 4x4 outpost... it got wet in the jeep Friday when the rain/hail/snow storm rolled in, and we laid it out to dry at the hotel and peeled the pages apart to read it on the long trip back to PA...
Anyways... yea.. I agree.. more focus on the modified class ... nice big pictures of them helps us (semi)normal folks get some ideas... the vast majority of us are never gonna have a buggy, but will build our jeep/yota/zuki close to what the modified guys run.
Keep up the good work, my husband wants a subscription.

Scratch that. The last 2 issues he dreweled all over mine before I could finish it.
OldGreen 03-30-2005, 07:31 PM The boss tells me to be arrogant and cranky, I'll be arrogant and cranky.

Maybe you need a disclaimer at the top. You know something like:
The following is not written from any one person. But, rather it is written from that person we can all be on our worse day. Or worse yet, that person we all knew growing up as the crazy man in the ugly house on the corner, with the unkept yard, cobwebs in the windows and stacks of unread papers on the front porch. You know the one that only came out to yell at the "infernal racket of you unruly kids" or to sick his ungroomed, scrawny and viscious mutt on you. Yeah THAT guy! The one you loved to hate and plotted and planned with all the other kids in the 'hood to secretly kidnap and tie to a tree in the forrest . . . .with his dog.
OldGreen 03-30-2005, 08:42 PM That's not a bad idea. . .hmmmmm.
Although, I do like to ruffle a few feathers. A lot of times people that get pissed over stuff like this are just as arrogant as OG. ;)
zukiester1 03-30-2005, 08:46 PM The crew at XOM deserves a nice pat on the back for bringing our sport to the eyes of the world. No other magazine covers competitions as well or as accurately, (except for the WEROCK schedule), as XOM. Kudos guys and gals for a job well done, the superior thickness of the rag kicks ass also.

Real or not people do not like to here arrogant people bragg
GRIDWNC 03-30-2005, 08:59 PM Real or not people do not like to here arrogant people bragg
I call B.S. People don't like to here anyone brag, period . . . about anything. Whether the bragger is arrogant or meely, bragging still makes others angry.
OldGreen 03-30-2005, 09:14 PM Hmmmm. . .I don't think OG was bragging. . .he was telling a story from his perspective with his personality. I don't remember him saying that he was a bad ass or anything along those lines.
I think it is really funny that no one said a word about the drinking on the trail editorial in the first issue and it was written from exactly the same perspective. On the other hand, only a small handful of people have had anything negative to say and the vast majority got the point and a chuckle at the same time.
Would you rather have a generic editorialist like a lot of the other rags? He could tell you what he found when cleaning his garage or how he hasn't had time to go wheelin'. . .Or, we could have an edgey, old school wheeler who has been around the block enough times not to give a shit what anyone thinks of him, but has a good point to prove at the same time. That way, we could start a thread on an internet bbs every month to talk about whether or not he is full of crap. Yeah, he's loud and a little arrogant, but one thing you haven't seen is the mad props he gives to people that lend a hand or. . .hand an ass. . .out on the trail. He prefers to think of himself as "plain spoken". It just so happens that the first two editorials focussed on people that piss him off. Stay tuned.
crawlmag 03-30-2005, 09:48 PM Gawd, if you guys only knew the real OG... I remember back in the day (2004) he was handing people their asses on his 31" Mud terrains and now he has 35's - can't wait to wheel with him this weekend haha.... I think a lot of people take their attitudes from Bulletin Boards and use it to critique magazine articles like this and it is wrong - it is a different realm. OG isn't trying to piss people off but bring our sport and "attitude" to the masses.... this may seem arrogant to you but to little billy rich kid in his new Runican't its funny and hopefully sinks in...
More coverage of modified classes and trail rigs, got it... european stuff too, Iceland, Sweden, Mongolia, Japan.... we will go there in 2006-2006!!
OldGreen 03-30-2005, 09:53 PM I never had 31s. . . they were 32s
Famous potato 03-31-2005, 09:02 AM That's not a bad idea. . .hmmmmm.
Although, I do like to ruffle a few feathers. A lot of times people that get pissed over stuff like this are just as arrogant as OG. ;)
Its all OK until you start picking on me.
I never give bad spots and always stand way away from the trail when I drink.
Po' riggity 03-31-2005, 11:59 AM Ok, so maybe I missed the real point of the article, but IMHO, its hard to see the "real" point of OG's article, with the biting sarcasm and total arrogance shining through the way it did. In regards to having tons of people trying to spot you, only confusing you all the more... Maybe I just wheel with the right people. When I get in a position like that, and people start yelling at me to do stuff, I tell everyone to be quiet, and assign one person to spot me, and everytime, that works fine.

rbaer 03-31-2005, 03:56 PM Hands down the best Rockcrawling Magazine right now. I do agree that we need more pics of the modified and Legends class thats where all of us are. We like to see rigs just like ours Kicking ass. Keep up the good work and always send mine out 2weeks before Rbaer's.
Scratch that. The last 2 issues he dreweled all over mine before I could finish it.
I quit "drooling" as soon as I realized that your second-place ass was in it and not the class winner, namely myself. Well, almost 'cuz I still had to read the rest of what I consider the best off-road rag on the stand.
Go sell gas.
Bmf24 03-31-2005, 06:13 PM still waiting on my mag to show up.
Krusty 04-03-2005, 12:39 PM I loved the mag !!!!
Read it cover/cover twice while sitting in the hospital waiting for the wife who was haveing kidney surgery.
FYI, there will be A LOT of 'REAL WORLD' people wheelin their 'pride/joy' at the Hammers the weekend of April 22/24.
And Friday nite, one of the luckiest 4X'ers, the raffle winner, will take delivery of the trail truck the Tin Benders built at TDS in 15 hours !!!!!!!!
crawlmag 04-03-2005, 09:45 PM I'll see if we can be there, I'll add it to the agenda for tomorrows secret meeting....
NZRFU 04-05-2005, 06:42 AM Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Thanks for puttin' out a rag that doesn't have an article on budget boosts, 32" tires, or truck "shows".
Keep up the incredible work.
