: High Steer Dana 30
yoink 03-15-2005, 02:57 PM So here goes the first post. Try not to kill me.
I've got a 95 YJ. I've also got a stripped caliper bolt on the passenger side knuckle. Looks like the previous owner did somthing stupid and mangled the threads. It will thread but not get tight so currently it's tightened as much as I could with the added help of a half a bottle of red locktight. (Ya, I know it'll be fun to change my pads later.) But that isn't the question. Just the reason.
I want to replace the knuckle (i think) and I figured in the process I might as well go with some form of a high steer setup. I've done some research and really can't find the answer I'm hoping is out there. My lack of welding type skills or desire to build custome axle tubes i think eliminates me from being able to put in the D44 knuckle setup in the tech section. The other kits I've seen are for the TJ's or super $$bling.
My current setup (about 3 inches of total lift shackles and BDS lift) doesn't really call for a high steer setup but In the future I'll be going with SOA so I'll need something of this nature regardless. I'm not a super crazy fab guy either (indicating my total lack of fabrication type skills)
- Can I be proactive (like my boss keeps telling me to be) and throw some kind of High steer setup on here now?
- Should I just go pickandpull another passenger side Dana 30 knuckle?
- Should I be looking at something else?
- What do the pirate Gods recommend?
Flame on. But save my corpse for my wife please.
P&T Jeeps 03-15-2005, 03:06 PM not a bad first Q at all, especially since some prior research was done. here's your options in a nutshell:
- buy a new HS knuckle (Tera)
- buy a HS kit (M.O.R.E.)
- buy the HS knuckle part from M.O.R.E. and build your own tie-rod/drag link
- drill out the current knuckle & caliper sleeve & re-tap the knuckle to accommodate a 9/16" bolt (done it multiple times & it'll cost you only the price of a tap, cheap)
you can go the last route for now & start saving for one of the above kits...
EDIT: BTW, a good wheelin' buddy had the M.O.R.E. main knuckle part & it's very nice and has served him well on several trips.
whypave 03-15-2005, 03:15 PM I've got a used MORE Hi steer kit for sale including both knuckles to save you all the machining work. Hit me with a PM and I can give you more info if you are interested. It is from a 94 YJ.

i just put the more kit on mine and i love it. i havent had a chance to wheel it yet but i think i will do well.

if you are going SOA in the future, you are going to have to do some welding anyway. get the D44 and do the SOA. this way you are only doing it once vice twice! then you can do your high steer on your 44.
BrettM 03-15-2005, 06:35 PM i would recommend swapping some real axles when you go SOA, like Waggy D44s, those are easy.
therefore, just replace what you've got now. go to PnP, or people often give away d30s.
JeepFarm 03-15-2005, 07:10 PM Hey dude,
This is what I did when I came across the same problem when I went SOA with a D30 and the 8.8 set up!
It worked great, I used this set up for 5 years untill I went with the big chit!
Take a look around my webshots and you can see the different pics of me wheelin with the high steer arms on the D30.

YjJon 03-15-2005, 07:13 PM You can go to the parts store(napa Auto zone pepboys) and they make a over sized caliper bolt that threads right in. :grinpimp: :smokin:
Just use a Helicoil dude. I stripped the knuckle on my D30 at the caliper bolt as well. Hell, if you've got some taps, I even have a few Helicoils I could ship you for free. That's what I did, and it's held just fine. Unless you were using this as an excuse to go high steer, there are easier and cheaper solutions!
Droopy 03-15-2005, 08:33 PM I've got the M.O.R.E. kit on mine and it's great. It survived a whole season of severe beatings in the stock class at NEUROC comps. My Jeep is still sprung under on 3.5" BDS leaves w/ 35" Krawlers. Works great for a mild trail beater.
Here is a pic of mine head on. You can see how everything is parallel. I had to go back to a stock pitman arm because the drop pitman arm dropped the angle the other way!

hotwheelsYJ 03-16-2005, 05:07 PM I went with a homebrew kit from a WJ in the junkyard.
Just get from the knuckles out from a '00 or newer Grand Cherokee
It also gets you dual piston calipers :grinpimp:
Here is the write up I based it on Clicky (http://www.americanjeepers.com/articles/12/1/WJ-Brake-and-Knuckle-Conversion-for-YJ%92s)
bp95yj 03-16-2005, 05:18 PM the wj set up is nice.
Just make sure you make a sweet tie rod and draglink :flipoff2:
The dual piston calipers also work very nice with a larger tire

I saw this guys dana 30 hi steer bracket on ebay a couple months ago, what do yall think about it?
creepyjeepy 03-16-2005, 11:14 PM the best and simplest setup is the tera HS. i have it on my 93, springover with 2.5 springs; have had no problems with it or bumpsteer. it simply replaces the old knuckle and does not require machining or anything special. :smokin:
sureshot40sw 03-20-2005, 12:40 AM I have a complete M.O.R.E set up for sale also... tierod, draglink and all rod ends included.. never wheeled..

Any one done this? comments concerns? drop pitman arm. Cautions I have been  ing it up today

I wish I would have used this kit.
I just bought the pass side tera knuckle and ran the draglink above the springs and the tie rod below using 1 ton ends. The tie rod hangs down there way to far...
Hendo 08-14-2007, 10:03 PM hold on here this is in the hard core section ?, since when has a dana 30 been hard core
lets be real here give some real advise ,DONT PUT MONEY INTO A WEAK ASS AXLE ATLEAST GO DANA 44
GONRACIN 08-20-2007, 03:36 AM here's a question. All the high-steer kits are for a YJ, because they are leaf sprung. Now, if you had an XJ/ZJ HP axle, but setup for SOA YJ style, would they still work?
ewalls 08-20-2007, 04:42 AM yoink where are you located at ? i have a pass knuckle if you want it.

I am supposed to recieve that kit in the mail on 05 Nov (next Monday). I will let you all know how it turns out.

So are you saying a ZJ or XJ D30 with all the bracketry whacked off and spring perches welded on top?
I have the Teraflex system on my ZJ, whats nice is you can put the drag link on the top or bottom of the arm. Mandatory bottom in my case due to misalignment of drag link and trac bar. I put a YJ stock pitman on to help this but I still need to refab the trac bar and mounts to get everything parallel. Drives back and forth to work fine, minor bump steer.
Using a WJ knuckle will work good too, however with SOA I think there "may" be issues with interference of the crosslink. With the Tera knuckle this arm is higher which was intended to clear the SOA's leaf springs packs better.
BLKYJ 11-02-2007, 06:58 PM My JB 4X4 kit will be here wed. will post my opinions soon after .
I will fab parallel trackbar mount at time of install .
CJ4U2NV 11-02-2007, 07:31 PM i'm sure someone will kill me if i'm wrong, but won't the D30 take D44 knuckles. then use CJ D30 outters and hubs. if i'm right, this would give him PNP chevy knuckles and get rid of the vac disco to.

I used that kit. It works ok. The tie rod was too long so I had to cut it. The pitman arm also hits the tie rod. I also broke one of the knuckle brackets, but they replaced it for free.
I have also used the MORE kit and I think it is much better. I had no problems with it at all.
Let me know how it works out.
Good Luck.

They changed the knuckle dimensions on the 30 in 87 when they started puttin em in the YJ. CJ knuckles or 44 knuckles wont fit in later 30's, you'd have to cut the yokes off and use the CJ ones to do that.
ksmith 11-03-2007, 07:03 AM I'm using the rocky road kit on my xj w/ front leaf conversion. I bought the brackets seperately, had them mounted but couldn't find a local person to build the tie rod I wanted reasonably. Ended up buying a tie rod from them which arrived yesterday (looks really good and beefy). I looked into the tera knuckle but it was for '90 and up. Almost bought the M.O.R.E. one but they use heims. This system seems ok by me.

I have not used a track bar for over 4 years on my YJ... even drove it across country (3500 miles). What is the point?
Steve N 11-03-2007, 08:06 PM :cow: moved this because while it's great tech, and good information for those with 30's. A 30 isn't hardcore however.
I actually reamed out the D30 knuckles on my TJ and mounted my steering on top instead of on bottom.. this doesn't give you ture high-steer but it does raise the tie up abit.. Best thing about that if you go with the proper steering up grades everything can be transfered over if you swap to a 44.

Which tie rods did you use?
Where did you purchase your reamer?
What size tubing did you use?
Did you have any clearance problems?

google tie rod flip kit and this is the first link
http://www.ok4wd.com/index.php/catalog/product/rock_equipment_tie_rod_flip_kit/
you use the stock tie rods all over again, no clearance problems at all.
yotaboyz 11-12-2007, 01:53 PM Ok I will look at that.
It looks though that he has upgraded his tie rod which is what I would like to do.
here's the part #'s for the joints
ES2233L-Pass/side tie rod
ES2234R-Drivers side tie rod
ES20227L-High missalignment drag link end (attaches to Pitman arm)
ES2026R- Drag link end attachs to ES2233
if your not crazy about putting the tie rod on top it can always go in the stock location..
offroadjunkie 11-13-2007, 12:27 AM didnt even read the post but why the fuck bother:flipoff2:
BLKYJ 11-15-2007, 01:14 PM Went well , feels great ! :smokin:

I ditched the trac bar after all :flipoff2: to excessive / travel limiting links !
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/raceclub/DSCN0648.jpg
I used their "raised steering bracket" and sleeved / extended drag link .
[Memphis] 12-12-2007, 01:10 PM Will that setup work on an XJ D30? I like...
