: Axle tubes: .250 4130 or just .500 1026?

Ok, one more axle tube question and then I´ll go back to getting high on 7018 fumes (a more delicate and refined buzz than 6011, IMO). :smokin:

I´m retubing a diff, and I´d like to get wall thickness opinions. Will 3"x.250 4130 be a good choice on a front 44 for a late model jeep? I am leaning towards throwing in some 3"x.500 1026 or similar steel in there, but now I'm thinking about total weight and relative strength. I SO like the psi on 4130, but will .250 be strong enough?

The deal with this is that there are two shops in town here that will retube. Seems my 50 ton press is still nonexistant.

One is a race shop that retubes diffs 24x7 with the CrMo, but won't touch the thick wall normal carbon steel for some reason. The other will seemingly put any tube in their press, but is less of a diff shop than the other. Which got me to thinking...

Any ideas on this? What do normal 1/2 ton fronts use?

Thanks
Bob

I vote 1/2" wall. When I got my Dynatrac 60's built I asked for 1/2" front and rear. They said they always tube fronts with 1/2" but in the rear they usually use 3/8". I had them put 1/2" anyway.
