: Vomiting fuel? (no search results)

The past few weeks I've noticed a stain on the side of the truck, under the fuel cap. Since I have a nasty habit of filling the tank all the way to the top, and haven't washed the Cruiser in a *long* time, I didn't pay much attention to it, but yesterday I went to get something in it and I noticed the smell of fuel. I popped the lid and noticed it was wet under the cap. Stupidly, I opened the cap, and about a quart of fuel comes gushing out!
This is something I'd never seen before, I'm guessing a clogged or pinched breather line? Anyone have any suggestions? It's not the cap, I replaced that with a brand new one I'd bought years ago and never used.

Truck is an FJ62 but has the FJ60-style tank, without the internal fuel pump.

Did it happen after you drove it? This exact thing happened to me. But it would only happen after I drove it. What was happining is I bashed the exhust causing a major leak right after the muffler so it was not any noiser than normal and the exhust was directly hitting the tank making it get real hot building tons of preasure in the tank I would take off the cap and it would puke fuel if it was full or let out very preasurised fuems. After I fixed the exhust it quit. Just an idea your might be different.

Not trying to be rude, just stating the obvious....

Yesterday in science we were learning the basics of what heat and cold does to some stuff...FYI if you didnt know, you put gas in when it is cooler and fill it to the top. ok, thats good, but now that gas gets warm for whatever reason and expands. You open it-it pukes the "extra" gas.

Called thermal expansion, thats why its recommended not to top off your tank!:skull:

Well this has been discussed several times here in the past, and besides myself, a few others on the board have had it happen to them.

Here's my story: It's been about a year since mine has done it, but it did it off and on for about 1 and half years. I noticed it mostly on hot days, my cruiser would start sputtering, then die. I would check the glass fuel filter only to find it empty. The whole cruiser would reek of raw fuel, then I can see it pouring out of the gas cap, once I opened it on a really hot day in a gas station and it started shooting a large burst of gas everywhere!

The gas tank would be to hot to touch! (very scary) Then I would crack the fuel line and it would siphon back into the fuel filter and start back up. I tried everything, relpaced lots of parts, but still no fix. Finally I got mad and took it to my local Toyota dealer, they kept it for a week, and found that the gas tank had had a recall on it since 1985 or so (its a 82) They replaced it along with some other stuff, but it still did it.

They did'nt charge me anything, and they wanted it for another test, so I let them have it. Another week, they put a new gas cap, fuel canister, lines, and some other stuff, but it still did it! So I took it home and gave up. Now for some reason it just does'nt do it anymore!

And also during all the time I would come to find it just sittingin the driveway sometimes just spilling gas out of the cap for no reason at all! Even if I had'nt driven it all day. A couple of times I had neighbors knock on my door just to tell me that my cruiser was spilling gas all over the street!

Anyways, thats the end of my book. Good luck!

HC, Jeff is right. There is a recall on fj60 fuel tanks, but good luck getting yours done, eh? :)

It's possible the charcoal cannister line is clogged, but then again, your rig may not have such a thing. Definitely a venting issue. I know this has come up a bunch on the LCML. It would be worth a search of the archives (http://www.birfield.com/cgi-bin/wilma/landcruisers).

I have this happen sometimes after I converted to 350 FI. It happens more in summer than winter. I probably will install an additional vent line to the roof rack for now since I am too lazy to go through the expansion set up. I hoping it wont push fuel that high :(

Henry, my 80 did that. Got a new gas cap from Toyota and it seemed to stop, but now it's done that once more. Only happens when I park with the nose up on a hill (our driveway) on a warm day.

I'm parking nose-down 'til I can take a good look at the filler neck. Bet there's a clogged or cracked air line off it.

on my 55 the PO moved the vent hoses for some reason, they were looped down below the tank, fuel sat in them like a P-trap under a sink. end result no vent for expansion and fuel poured out cap. re routed hoses to higher than tank and have had no prob since.:)
