The southbend/LUK clutch is so much nicer than the stock unit, about half the force required to disengage it. Also look into the short shift kit from BD diesel. :D

hehe thats what i wanted to know, so when do the clutchs start going south on these trucks or is it a case by case basis? Also is starting out in 2nd (or 3rd if you count L) hurting anything?

from a dead stop I typically start out in first as to not lug it too bad, but if I'm rolling any at all I start out in 2nd, however mine is a 4x4 with 3.73s on 285s....or for maximum tire spining start out in 2nd at about 2500 rpm, then feather the throttle to keep it about 2000 :D at least thats with the turbo on my early '99.

I bought this truck less than 3k miles ago. It has 70k. The clutch is slipping under max torque, uphill, with a trailer.

Considering that this truck towed a fair amount (it came with gooseneck hitch and vacuum brakes!), 60-70k ain't bad at all.

Anytime you start in any gear lower than you should, you wear the clutch a little more than usual. I agree with the other poster that starting in 2nd when in motion is fine. I do that a lot. From a dead stop I use 1st (not L). I only use L from a dead stop, when I tow, or when I want to maneuver (sp).

huh mines got hydroboost brakes, and starting in 2nd is a nono gotcha

I start in "1" from a stop, I only use "L" if I'm towing. I just replaced the clutch in mine @ 125,000 miles due to a throwout bearing going out. When I got it apart the clutch still had a lot of life left, it probably would have made it to 200,000 miles easy.

I put the LuK clutch in mine at about 95k. The stock clutch itself was in good shape, but the weights in the dual mass flywheel were coming apart.

With either the SouthBend or LuK clutch you have to swap to a standard, one piece flywheel, so it was a no brainer to swap the clutch to solve the flywheel problem.

superdutys already have the one peice flywheel but thanks for the info

Ran into a couple things while doing it. The pivot-stud for the clutch arm was broken/worn down, got the part yesterday.

Ran into a more stupid logistics problem: I can't fit the tranny under the truck when it's on the tranny jack (in the garage), and I can't lift the truck because it hits the door/door opener (and the door can't be closed).

Truck is in my driveway right now. Gonna raise it, slide the tranny under it, push the whole mess into the garage and finish it up sometime soon.

... I have stupid neighborhood covenants that don't allow me to do stuff in my driveway... oh well.

Will report back when it's done.

Makes me very glad that I have a 2nd Jeep as a DD!

You have to take the tranny out from under the truck to install the clutch? Also what is that part number for that pivot stud so i can get one before I go to install my clutch?

You don't need to. I just did.

I'm actually kinda glad it worked out that way, otherwise I would have put it in with the broken pivot stud without knowing it was broken!

Here's ALL the info you'll need to change the clutch:

Well the South Bend clutch is in. It wasn't pretty but it's all back in one piece!

My first impression: Wow! I'm driving a sports car! The throw is about the same but the clutch action is MUCH lighter! My left knee which is a lame horse is now happy again!

If someone wants me to give a write up about changing the clutch in my F350, let me know. Not that much to it, except that you NEED a lift that can hold the truck. Don't do this in the driveway or in a 2-car garage. It sucks!

Make sure to remove the exhaust heat shield before trying to remove the t-case (if so equipped). Saves a TON of time & scrapped knuckles!

Well i went out and got me some new treads today, Nitto Terra Grapplers in a 265/75R16E varity. they are nice, quiet and smooth. but they went to align it and found all 4 ball joints are bad and yes I looked at them when they where shaking the wheel. any way here are some pics of the new treads.

I LOVE the 6 speed, its a little hard to get used to at first but the more I drive it the more I like it. The only other 6 speed ive driven was a regular cab F-350 4wd with a bench seat and hated it cause I couldnt rest my elbow on the center console like I can on my truck. Now I need a BD short sifter and a Southbend clutch to be completly happy BUT now that my tires arnt shaking and howling like the old ones I can feel the rear end vibrate when I step on the brakes :( . just more money to spend on it

You should bring that sucker out here to Arizona to sell it.. Same truck would go for $22-23k here.

Have you tried putting a shift kit in your 4R100? I put a Sonnax valve and a set of triculumator springs in mine and it now shifts like it SHOULD. Should help it last a lot longer too.
