Tranny is going out. What is the bellhousing to block bolt pattern? I am willing to swap out the transfer case to. What options are there ? I would prefer a auto.I will be doing a engine swap later , I have not decided to what yet but since the tranny is going out now if I can swap in something stout that may decide what brand engine later.

I've got an AX-5 in the garage in pieces. Want me to take a pic of the bellhousing? What good will that information do you?

nope you are out of luck the bolt pattern is totally different...the only thing you could do($$$)is get the tranny and t-case of your choice and then get an adapter to mate it to the 2.5L

Do a search in the general 4x4 forum for T18a here recently it was almost discovered that a T18a (granny first short input shaft) tranny will bolt to the AX-5 bellhousing and use a modern 4.0L clutch and hydro stuff. With that swap you can run the D20 with the OE adapter (they came bolted together in 76-79 CJs) and get twin sticks and 4.86 low range plus it is about the shortest possible drivtrain combination you can get.

BUT nobody knows for sure if it works.

And the front output is on the wrong side for the stock axle but the correct side for a GM 60 which there is no shortage of unlike the Fords.

I think that would be a hell of a deal. You might be able to sell your AX5/231 and driveshafts and break even on the swap too.

I think you can use a ax-5 bellhousing on a nv3500  but im not positive.

The 2.5L has the same block pattern as the 60* GM V6s if that helps.

I think the NV3550 is only for the 6 cylinders. If it could be done AA would definately have an adapter for it. I think the NV3550 or AX-15 to 4cyl are the two combos that they tout as undoable. Could be wrong though.

If the trans is 21 then it sounds like you have a peugeot 5 speed but according to AA they were only in till 89 but were found behind 4.2Ls...this is Jeep we are talking about though so you never know...is the tranny a long 21 spline or a flush 21 spline...if its long then what I said above applies...if its flush then it would be either an AX4 or AX5(same thing)

What part of SLC are you in???have you checked out www.rockymountainextreme.com its a bunch of local guys form provo to logan

That seems to be the only options for manuals from the factory...if you wanted to go to an auto you could get a TF999 and it would bolt right up to both items you have and you would save yourself 8" being the TF999 is only 16" long and the BA 10/15 is 24" long...just a thought

xmbldx, you have a light duty Peugeot BA10/15 (split case, long 21 spline output). You have lots of options but they all involve a different tranny. NV3550/4500 and World Class T4 and T5(AA) are a few of them. Check out the online AA catalog. It's got lotsa good info.

Actually I replaced it with another AX-5 over a year ago when I first bought the Jeep. I wasn't as "learned" then but it didn't matter 'cause there wasn't any options then same as now. You want it for parts? The Jeep performs like stock with 4.88's and 33's. Even retained the stock 40 tooth speedo gear.
