93 YJ 4.0 with a stock AX15

O.k. here is the situation. last week my clutch pedal started to feel real soft and would not alow me to shift into gears if i had been driving awhile without using the clutch. but it would alow me to shift gears if i was driving around town and shifting a lot even though the pedal was soft.

so of course i checked the fluid and the level was fine. next i blead the system, i could not get a good fealing clutch pedal even after bleeding for an hour. so i purchased and installed a new clutch master cylinder.

after bleeding the system for another hour i was able to get a good feeling pedal. so i test drove it around the block and everthing was good.

today on the way home from seattle on I5, the pedal got real soft again and would not let me shift gears. so i pulled over and made sure all the hydraulic lines were secure and they were. then i checked the fluid, and the fluid was fine.

what the hell am i overlooking? any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

What Wells said. check and see if you have any fluid dripping from the bottom of the bell housing. I had one blow completely, peddle went straight to the floor, no clutch at all. you should still be able to speed shift, not using the clutch though.

If his slave went bad and he has lots of fluid outside the bellhousing his fluid level wouldn't be fine.

Did you bleed the system correctly?

i was thinking of the slave cylinder also. however, since its in the bell housing, its kind of hard just to check it.

i am planning on taking it to my buddies shop. he has one of those big fluid/bleeder machines. if that doesnt work, then i guess i will be pulling the trans out this weekend to replace the slave.

thanks for the replys

Had the same prob, ended up being the slave. Replaced it and fixed the prob.

where did you get the master?

2 weeks ago i had to replace mine and went with a cheap $75 brand (running short on funds). i had a similar situation. mine would bleed fine and be really firm, but after driving a few miles it would be soft. i guess the cheap one was sucking air somehow, but there were no drips. solution: return the cheap one and spend $140 at NAPA. installed it yesterday and it's still fine.
