i just wanted to bump this to the top again...i have a M8000 and i have no idea, ya got me curious now:confused:

Just pull on the cable. If the brake's not working, there's a bit of resistance from the motor but you can overcome it with a good strong manual tug. If you can't move the cable with a strong pull like this, then it's supposed to be good for the full rated capacity of the winch. The brake is automatic, its always on when you're not powering in or out. You can turn it off by moving the selector to Freespool. However, when the brake does fail it goes without warning. If you've got doubts about it, you can test it under full load by winching halfway up a good hill and then just stop winching.
