: What are better to wheel????
I am basically looking for anything to go wheeling but just recently I have been looking into broncos. Is a late 60's model bronco better and less expensive to wheel, or is a newer 80's model bronce II better to wheel???
 :mad2:  :usa:

You're kidding, right?
FearMe 02-19-2002, 10:48 PM He's not kidding, it says newbie....:flipoff2:
Ok Lure, your talking to the proper two people here. Get the EB (Early Bronco 1966-77 only) The B2's you need to build a lot to even get close to the performance of a stock EB. The later models, except for 78-79 are IFS and BIG.
Kurtastrophe 02-19-2002, 11:33 PM Like he said, look for the '66-'77 Bronco.
Preferably, one already set up with a Dana 44 front end and power steering. Those options came stock on the later-year models, but could have been installed on any year.
And whatever you do, take someone with you who knows Early Broncos when you go look at one to purchase. Especially for rust, it's not always an obvious thing.
About the only good thing a bronco 2 is good for, at least offroading-wise, is perhaps the body and interior as a donor on another rolling chassis.
Rubicrawler 02-20-2002, 08:12 AM Here are some basics to look for in an EB:
1) stick with a V-8- 289, 302 or, if you're lucky, a 351
2) '71 1/2 and later came with a D44 up front. Look for a D44
w/Power disc brakes.
3) Power steering- I believe 76 & 77 had ps as an option. Many of
us have added ps using F150 boxes and chevy pumps
4) 3 spd tranny's are crap. Look for a rig with a NP435 4-spd (my
favorite) or an auto.
5) Check the floor pan for rust. Replacement panels are available
from the aftermarket.
6) of course, lockers are always a bonus.
Good luck!
FearMe 02-20-2002, 01:05 PM And the most important thing to remember about buying an Early Bronco is that it already has the stuff everyone else needs to buy to upgrade their Jeeps to an Early Bronco:D

How true. Who has some extra rust and a couple of oil leaks for sale ;)

CrazyHorse 02-24-2002, 02:28 PM it's longer, and the sheetmetal is wider (by 6 or 7 inches). 78 and 79 are the two best years of the fullsize bronco's though.
You won't be sorry with a 66-77. When I started looking for a rig I planed on a jeep. I found the Bronco and have been very happy.
They are well biult, Parts an't tooo $$$ and they look cool! They are getting harder to find these days.
Just my thoughts
I will keep all of this info in mind!!!
:bounce2: :bounce2: :bounce2:
What year did they start the d44 in the E.B. and what year did they stop them??

Kurtastrophe 02-27-2002, 03:18 PM Ford started putting Dana 44's in Broncos in mid-'71. A quick way to tell, if you are looking at a '71 or earlier Bronco is:
- Dana 30 front axles have kingpins.
- Dana 44's use ball joints.
That is what I was looking for!!!
:skull: :skull:
unclefester45102@aol 02-28-2002, 04:27 PM you might want tothink about the full-size if you don't mind the the size. The 78-79 came with dana 44 upfront and ford 9" in the rear they all came with the 351m or bigger motor. they are pretty tough trucks a love mine. just another way of thinking.
Kurtastrophe 03-01-2002, 06:47 AM Yep... Absolutely nothing wrong with using a Fullsize, especially a '78-'79 with straight axles.
- Wider trac width than an EB
- Longer wheelbase than an EB
- High Pinion Dana 44 front axle
All boils down to personal preference.
Have any of you heard of the new electric lockers??? Are they supposed to be good???
