: stripped out holes - solutions?
Serious One 03-19-2005, 09:00 AM So I'm working on the front hubs of the CrewCab, and go to install the rotor and torque down the bolts. Get one torqued down, so far so good...go to the next and it strips out. CRAP! Pull it out and see that it's only engaged on about 2-3 threads. Get two more in and then the last one also strips out. Same story.
So, do I take the hub down to a machine shop, get all the holes drilled out and tapped, get the spacer drilled out, and have the rotor drilled out too?
-or-
Do I try to find another late SIII hub? I think I know where I can get one, but I'm just es'plorin' my options.
Thoughts?
FrankenRover 03-19-2005, 10:02 AM Helicoil it?
billster
64rovr 03-19-2005, 10:17 AM theres enough meat there (IMO) to drill it out and tap it for the next largest bolt size. i cant remember offhand what size it is, but you should be able to figure that out easily.
either that or ^^^^ helicoil it.
Serious One 03-19-2005, 12:26 PM Yeah,I think I'm going to take it to a machine shop and have them put a helicoil in it. I think that the next biggest bolt size would be 7/16ths, but I don't want to have to modify the spacer and brake rotor.
Thanks.
:D
JSBriggs 03-19-2005, 01:11 PM You can't tighten one down at a time. Do it little by little until all of the bolts are tight against the disc, then torque them.
Or I've got an early RR Front axle I could sell you or trade for a nice Prada hand bag.

portalrover 03-19-2005, 03:18 PM When I used to run series 3 hubs I drilled and tapped the holes out to 7/16 UNC and locktighted studs (UNF one end UNC other end)into the holes. The 7/16 UNF nuts were too large to permit easy removal of the wheel and brake drum so I drilled out and retapped some 3/8'' unf nuts to 7/16 UNF
The permanent studs never gave me any problems but it did make removing the drive flanges more difficult so I drilled and tapped 2 extra holes in the flange to 3/8 unc, and by screwing a bolt through each of these holes with the end of the bolt pushing against the hub the flange would be pushed off.

Damn that's a lot of work. Can't you just helicoil them all and use new bolts? Helicoils should be a lot harder than the original thread and are pulling on a bigger diameter so less likely to strip out.
LiftedDiscovery 03-19-2005, 11:49 PM One of the bolts in the rear hub get screwed up once, I just used a Helicoil. It has been fine for about 5 or 6 years now.

portalrover 03-20-2005, 12:55 AM I think helicoiling them all plus buying new bolts would be more expensive and almost just as much work as what I did. And you would still have 3/8'' bolts.
In some of my more hamfisted moments I can easily snap a new 3/8 bolt or three with a regular ring spanner, but I have to try really hard to snap a 7/16'' one.

I did mean helicoiling them as they go. You are using hi tensile bolts (3 strikes on the head)? Do you have forearms like Popeye?
afirover 03-24-2005, 06:04 AM What we need here is a true rover expert
so who you gona call ?
well only one guy that can fix this with everyone eles's knowlege
calling the one and only
RED RINO DUDE
Im sure he has had this problem with his parts trucks or at least should have a few send you to practice on

No, I am usually my limpwristed self but after a heavy days work, say removing and refitting an LT95 transmission or lying on the floor setting up a Salisbury diff, I temporarily lose
''the feel'' for what is not tight enough and SNAP !
Bill.
Serious One 03-24-2005, 05:56 PM No, I am usually my limpwristed self but after a heavy days work, say removing and refitting an LT95 transmission...
Yeah, that's a pretty good days' work. Heavy bastids ain't they?
:D

They aren't so bad, I picked mine up from the floor and place it on a workbench without seroius bodily injury. Then again Mike is built like the older brother from Napoleon Dynamite.

64rovr 03-25-2005, 02:20 PM Already voted for ya. Not a fan of the blurry-emotional photo, although it isn't bad.
Do you ever take it off any sweet jumps?
Serious One 03-25-2005, 02:54 PM Hehe, I've got a photo of Big J's somewhere with my wife's Passat parked in front.
Had some tots and a corn-dog. :D
