: SSII door inserts

I was just getting ready to bolt in the cage on my silver scout and project when I realized the inserts need to be drilled in first. Does anybody have any good pics of their inserts installed so I know where to mount these? They are the fiberglass ones possibly from Kentrol but not sure. The bottom of the inner panels have these bumps in them that spaces the bottom edge away from the seal lip so pics of that area would be nice. I can post pics of what I'm talking about. I've never fawked with these before or paid close attention to an SSII to find out.

Thanks. :flipoff2:

I don't really know what your asking, but I can take a pic or measure something on sunday if I know what you want

My inner fiberglass repros (I assume are also Kentrol) sit flush against the floor and run along the inside of the door lip. They are pushed as far forward as they can go, basically sitting up against the bottom end of the window frame. I can send you pics of whatever you want to see. Let me know.

I haven't installed my windsheild frame yet so I don't have that to gauge the panels off of. I'll take some pics of the bottom of the inner panel to best explain what I'm asking. Looks like I have to take the cage out again, predrill for the inner panels, install the cage again, then install the inner panels. I'll take some pics and you'll see what I'm up against.

Jeff,
I have a bunch of pictures on how NOT to do it. Interestingly enough this is my second install which came out worse than my first install (remember my blue scout?).

What I did wrong was line up the insert so it was level with the very top of the body, when it should of been lower. You can also see where I put my rivets.

http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_tubss2.jpg

I you can picture the outer insert being installed you can see how it would not fit correctly.
http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_dsouter%7E0.jpg

You can see the gap it left inbetween the floor and the bottom lip of the insert and I thought the insert were just made too short.

http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_psoutergap.jpg

So I taped up both sides on the inside.
http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_door-tape.jpg

And gobbed on the durabak
http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_2-coat-psdoor.jpg

It was no real big deal that it didn't line up correctly, the pain in the ass was putting the cowl back in and having to cut and gring away a bunch of fiberglass to get it to fit correctly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Joe, That info helped greatly. Looks like I need to mount my inner panels in first before I mount the cage. Your second to the last picture the panel has two indentations on the bottom. I assume those "bumps" rest on the lower seal lip or do you cut a slot in them so that they fit over the seal lip? Have any close up pics of the outside panel installed? Thanjks again.

I did the same damn thing! I thought the inserts were made wrong :shaking: I ended up trimming the hell out of the inners to get them to fit.

I'm not sure what those are for, I also welded some 1/8" x 3 or 4 inch tall tabs on top of door sill on the inside of the insert and rivited the lower section of the insert to that, I did that because the bottom tends to hang loose. I'll try to snap a pic of the outer to show you how it doesn't line up.

Those two indentations had L brackets screwed to the floor on the orig. SSII. Seems that the factory didn't like the bottom of the pannel moving around either.

Thanks for that tidbit. Today I rolled some Herculiner on the inner panels and bought a box of large head aluminum rivets. I plan on installing the inner panels tomorrow. Guess I'll just install them touching the floor on the bottom and hope the outer panels fit.

Hey Joe, Did you get a chance to take any more pics?

Thanks, Jeff

I've never seen herculiner or other bedliner material on fiberglass. Does it stick as well on fiberglass as it does on metal? I was thinking of doing this to the inside and possible outside of my inserts.

Jeff here are some more examples of how I did it wrong

I did mount the inners first without checking how the outers would line up.
Too tall.

http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_03230007.jpg

The tape is covering a large hole I drilled so I can have access to the bolts that hold the winshield in,
I did that so I could remove the windshield cowl at a base camp.
http://www.uploads.biz/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/normal_03230006.jpg

Too much gap at the bottom which is okay with me.
I painted where some of the rivets were ground off.
I left the glass unpainted for repair.

BTW, the liner holds up better on the glass than the metal.

I have had liner on the front of the insert opening (where the door rides) and on the step for almost 3 years now... maybe longer... it sticks REALLY well. I wouldn't put in on the step next time though.. if you *slide* out across the step in shorts, it scratches you up pretty good...

Thanks for those pics Joe and Hooper. I did get my inner panels installed yesterday. Looks like my outers are going to fit ok. Won't totally know until I get the front fenders back on.

Do the new ones come with that texture? Mine were smooth...

On second look, it looks like you herculined (or whatever) them before you installed them?
