: master cynlinder upgrades for '70 fj40 plus tube bender question
abtinsley 02-20-2002, 06:27 AM my '70 has the single stage master and i want to upgrade to a dual stage master setup, i have already switch the front axle for one with disks. what are my options? thanks in advance.
also looking to buy a tube bender, looking at the jd squared as apposed to the pro-tool, any help in making the decision would be appreciated.

Mustard Dog 02-20-2002, 09:03 AM It appears you failed to read the first sticky on this page:flipoff2:  :flipoff2:
RHINO 02-20-2002, 06:42 PM ahh gee whiz guys, the master is not an often asked Q, but as the bender goes, get what the hell you want, they are the same but no waiting on the pro tools.
as far as the master goes, since you have done disc swap, go get a master from a 89-90 4x toy pickup/4 runner and bolt it in, 1" bore will make a big difference.
coyote 02-20-2002, 07:57 PM or for the master get a Taco version...both work well
weigellj 02-21-2002, 09:40 AM I take it on the master question he is asking you would just add the master, not the round booster right?
SpaceGhost 02-21-2002, 10:15 AM The later Toy master cylinders are intended to be used with a booster for power assist brakes. There are none that bolt right up to the firewall and have dual circuits, or for that matter work with disks, at least from Toyota.
I originally used the Warden's booster adapter and a mini master cylinder. The brakes (4 wheel disks) never felt right. Way to much assist for my liking with every one of the 6 master cylinders I tried. Only one I didn't try was the fj80 one that was recommended late last summer on this board.
Instead, and after fooling with them way to long, I sold the whole assembly and found a gm non power master cylinder. Fabbed a mounting bracket to the firweall and am very happy with the feel and stopping power. This is with the 38's. I can't lock them up on the road at 35mph like some can, but it comes to a quick stop and I'm still in control of the vehicle.
I created a simple web page with some of the details and some pics. The link is here (http://www.iei.net/~msmythe/mastercylinder.htm) A quick note I don't know if I posted on the page is that there were two different configuration for the fluid reservoirs, one assumed a vertical mounting surface and the other an angled surface. My unit is the angled one and the bracket I fabbed was a bit more difficult as a result. This moves the master cylinder up which you can see in the photos.
RHINO 02-21-2002, 06:11 PM spaceghost i may not be understanding you right, there are no brake boosters to fit the firewall?? i put a mini booster and master on my FJ55 after the disc swap, bolted right up, then when the master started leaking(junkyard part) i got the 89 4 runner master and it bolted right to the booster.
SpaceGhost 02-21-2002, 07:43 PM The early cruisers with single circuit master cylinders (look like your clutch master) didn't use boosters. The tub has a or the strengthening rib running right next to the master, and the spacing between the 2 masters is too close for a booster to fit. Late 70's there was a change to dual circuit and a booster, the tub was changed then too.
Wardens makes an adapter that allows a booster to be mounted to the firewall, but it moves it forward 4-5". I had a weber 38 at the time and the cable mount made contact with the booster on lower 2 at Tellico. The result was the linkage stuck nearly wide open, glad I didn't freak and kit the key immediately.
I also used a mini booster with this adapter, they are the smallest I have seen, similar to the 71 Cruiser booster. The bigger one from later cruisers would have been even further forward and the stock early airbox would have had to be scrapped, since the master would be consuming the space.
I hope that cleared up what I meant and what Al is faced with. I failed to mention a very viable solution which is to find a later donor and cut the firewall out of it, snatch the later pedal assemblies and patch into his Cruiser. Drum brake pedal ratio is different than disks and ultimately may be why I was never happy with mine.
The guys at Master Power Brakes (http://www.mpbrakes.com/) had told me they were considering making a kit for Cruisers. They have lots of knowledge and are a good resource for brake upgrades and supplies.
RHINO 02-21-2002, 09:27 PM ahhh yes that clears it up, yup mine was all drum but had the dual cylinder. wich has the same bolt pattern as many later toys. i remember a post some time ago about patching in the firewall to do just this, i dont remember whose post it was.
BTW spaceghost, i left a msg on your other post about your non-USA carb, if its not spoken for i might be liking it when you do the EFI.
Cruzilla 02-22-2002, 06:40 AM Just installed a vacume assist out of an 88 mini-truck, front brake calipers out of a 94 fourrunner(on my 78 axles/rotors), rear calipers from a 78 malibu and a master cylinder from a 92 FJ80!
Man, can I stop in a hurry now!! Should have done this conversion a long time ago, it's almost as much of an impact as adding power steering.
Oh what a feeling!!
abtinsley 02-22-2002, 01:23 PM thanks for the info. i am going to give the s-10 master a try.
