: Exhaust/Muffler/Headers question

To those of you running headers on an f/2f engine, how did you connect the rest of your exhaust? Did you buy the "bolt-on" exhaust system or did you have one made at a muffler shop? Are you using the stock-type mufflers, or aftermarket like Dynomax or Flowmaster?

I'm just trying to get the most bang for my buck. Main focus is on reliability and cost, secondary focus is on performance.

Thanks for the help.

P.S. I did do a search on this, and that helped me decide to get headers, but I would like more specific info on the rest of the exhaust system.

Hey Shawn,

When you have them make it, make sure it is up under the frame so rock guard will bolt up and not hit it.

Come over to the house and I will show you the one I have.

Good to see you on the board!!! :)

I am really digging my 2F -> downey header -> 3" exhaust tubing -> flowmaster -> 3" exhaust. It's routed above the skid plate, exits high behind the rear wheel, inside the fenderwell, pointing down.

This guy did the exhaust:

Address: 925 W Napa St.
Sonoma, CA 95476

Love that sound, powerband went up about 200rpms after the exhaust.

previous owner installed the MAF header and exhaust system...held up real well and no rust yet. Plus it goes above the skid plate.
hmmm...maybe i'll have to fix that on my 78 before she gets ripped off! :D

Hey Jeff,
Love the nickname. Is that because of how fast you've been driving the Cruiser lately? ;)

I finally named my Cruiser "Turtle" because of the speed at which it moves from my garage to my driveway!

Morgan,
What model Flowmaster do you use with your 2F?

I have a MAF header with custum bent 2.5" stainless going to a Borla turbo (stainless) muffler that is abouve the drivers rear tire and the pipe exits out the rear quarter at about chest level.

Sounds great and cranks :rasta:

Thanks to Morgan's input and some modifications on the Con, I just got my exhaust redone. Very similar to Morgan's except I have the original exhaust manifold and went with 2-1/2" tubing. Took mine to Sierra Muffler here in Grass Valley, CA. The guy loves offroading and Cruisers and twisted up a fine, inside the frame rails system. Dynoflow muffler makes it sound damn near like a diesel, or at least a V8.

Haven't had a chance to "GET IT" yet, but I did notice that I have a bit more power than the 2" line and standard muffler. Not quite as good as the "semi-uncorked" condition the Rubicon left it in, but now I don't have passengers passing out from the Carbon Monoxide in the truck!

One thing that I really appreciated from these folks is that they welded some really nice hangers TO THE TUBING instead of the frame. Nice trianglulated pairs of metal strips welded together at the end. Mounted to the frame with a simple hole and some neoprene washers.

Smoooooooth..... Screwzer happy :smokin:

I am about to start the exhaust portion of my 2F rebuild and it was suggested that I transition from the header to the exhaust system with a short piece of stainless flex tubeing. The person making this suggestion had run a 2F with header for some time and was always having leak problems. Now the claim is he hasn't had any leak problems. Does anyone else have any experiance with this idea?
