: ZJ 42RE troubles.... need suggestions.

A friend of mine has a '94 ZJ with the 4.0/42RE. The tranny was having shifting trouble... or not shifting at all. He described it to me that it would try to shift if he was easy on the gas. (drive like grandma) If he drive normally, it "bangs"... something like holding the throttle and slamming the shifter back and forth from neutral to drive. If he manually throws it into neutral, then back into gear it shifts.

This was with his 4wd 42RE/NP249. Now, he has my '98 2wd 42RE and torque converter. That should have eliminated the tranny and torque converter he had. Still does it. I had him disconnect the TV cable and it didn't seem to help.

BTW... he was driving it yesterday with the speedo disconnected. His plug didn't seem to work with my speed sensor. It drove normally. Shifted fine. Now that the speedo is connected, it is acting up.

We're GUESSING it is the transmission computer under the dash. Any other thoughts?

i know it sounds horrible but it worked on mine 32RH........

get going 15-20 mph and throw it in park this will create a zippppping sound (neutral safety switch) when the jeep gets down to 5 mph or so it will go into park (so dont get rear ended)

this is supposed to backflush the system (clean out the governer) and it should start shifting properly. I did it when mine would not shift out of first and after i did it it went thru all 3 gears like new.

That DOES sound horrible! I'll tell Jay to give it a try and see what happens.

The only srewey thing is that it did this with his tranny. His ZJ now has my '98 tranny and toque converter. Wierd. I think the only tranny related thing not swapped was the TCU.

Thanks a lot. Link is forwarded. :)

DO NOT THROW IT INTO PARK THAT IS THE STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD! Mine did this in my 97 42RE. Change the fluid and filter, adjust the band that is in the tranny, and MOST IMPORTANTLY add a bottle of LUCAS TRANSMISSION additive. This stuff is thick, his trans has leaky internal seals, the thin fluid gets past them and it cannot shift well. The lucas will thicken it up boosting fluid pressure and that in turn will cause the tranny to shift like new.

um, from an electrical standpoint, it sounds like a bad sensor. since you said it only did it with the vss unplugged, it has to be an electrical problem. replace or TEST the vss before you go throwing your shit in park while driving. i know you swapped the tranny, but now the new tranny doesnt have the vss plugged in. you COULD splice the old VSS plug wires into a correct style plug on the new tranny so the vss will work. i seriously would have run a few tests on the VSS from the old one before I swapped a tranny.

I was not aware that there was a computer for the tranny under the dash.

hey, if you cant figure it out, think about selling the tranny and Tcase to me. I wanted a 32RH but for the right price i may take it.

That nasty "zippppp" noise is the parking pawl trying to grab ahold and stop the tranny.... prolly knocked a few teeth off with that move

Back to the original post, does the tranny shift at all? Or is it stuck in one gear? Try taking a look at the governor, if its stuck or 'tweaked' it would seriously affect shifting..

asked a transmission guy on the throwing it into park thing. he said it could work to free up the governor when it gets stuck, but dont do it on a Ford C6, or the tranny will end up on the road behind you. dont know if this will work but it still sounds like an electrical problem to me.
