: easy way to fill tranny with fluid??
TheBanjoman 03-24-2005, 09:53 AM In my recently swapped in 1600 8v I tied the internediate shaft to the tranny with bailing wire and tried to keep the shaft in when pulling the motor.
The shaft caught on the way out with the motor lift and I lost lots of fluid.
I didn't want to fill it again for fear of the same problems going back in and dumping what fluid I just added. Laying under the truck filling a squeeze bottle multiple times trying to force oil in isn't my kind of fun.
I don't have a pump to feed the gear oil in from below and wondered if I could do this.
Open up the fill plug and pour the gear oil in from the shifter hole till it trickles out of the fill plug??
It SEEMS like it would work but I wanted to check in case this was wrong thinking. Searches for 'tranny' didn't yield much.
dirtytoy 03-24-2005, 10:00 AM ya it should work alot of people do that, you shoudl just get a pump and put a longer line on it so you don't have to be under the rig

Thanks,
I'm getting too damn old to be laying on a creeper, futzing with a pump and needed a better way.
I'm building a new shop with a lift, should be ready by June so I won't have to keep laying on my back.
zukanuba 03-24-2005, 01:34 PM YUP! just poor it in through the top ;)
Islandzuki 03-24-2005, 04:22 PM Open up the fill plug and pour the gear oil in from the shifter hole till it trickles out of the fill plug??
.
yep thats how I always do it...or you dont even need to pull the fill plug just put the correct amount of fluid in and call it good....
the tranny capacities are posted in the FAQ :grinpimp:
sewerzuk 03-24-2005, 05:06 PM Speaking from exp here...if you do fill through the shifter hole and you leave the fill plug off, most of the gear oil you pour down the shifter will find its way out the fill plug...I learned that one last week :D
It sure is easier to pour in through the shifter though. To get level right you'll have to overfill it a little and then pull the filler plug and let the excess drain out
toyparts 03-25-2005, 07:34 AM i use an old fire exstingwisher bottle with a male quik-connect hose clamped in the end of the hose ..
just clean out the inside real good ,,,,,,
fill 3\4 the way with gear oil and pump it up to 50-60 psi of air
then just stick the male quik connect end into the fill hole ,,,,
and then squeeze the valve ,
it takes about 3 min to fill a sami tranny
The bottles that I buy have a little nozzle. I simply attach a longer hose ca. 3' with hose clamps and a piece of tube.
When I fill the tranny I put th hose into the fill hole and squeeze the bottle that fits in the wheelwell now.
So, no creeping under the car and sqeezing in this very tight spot. It works much quicker when you can get a good grip around the bottle.

UZI 9mm 03-25-2005, 12:16 PM Pretty much same thing here.
I remove the tranny or transfer cast shifter's cover plate and boot (doesn't really matter which) and put a 2' piece of clear vinyl tube ( about 5/8's I.D. I think it is, the same stuff I used for all my diff breathers) down into the fill hole.
Then I put in a funnel end into the top of the hose (wedged in good, it doesn't leak in the slightest) and pour in however much oil I can without overflowing the funnel capacity, until proper amount is finished.
Makes it easier to rig up a couple pieces of wood/angle iron-whatever across the two seats, and secure the funnel to them so it remains level. Then it's "hands off" and you can do other stuff without having to sit there holding it.
I have never used the "keep pouring until it comes out" method, I hate doing things like that! Just know how much is supposed to be in there, and put it in. It's not rocket science. :D
edit: with the x-fer case, I just remove the shifter and pour in the oil through it's hole instead of the filler hole on the side of the case, but I still use the same tubing and funnel method, as it works great for me.
Side note-sometimes it sucked trying to remove the metal cover plate holding down the shifter under it's rubber cover, so I drilled two small holes in it and threaded in two large sheet metal screws so I had something to grip when twisting the plate against the spring pressure.
Old "pumping" soap bottles. That's what I use if you can't get to the top. With the Samurai, just fill from the shifter, it's off already...so why not?

But if you pull the motor and the intermediate shaft falls out and the oil dumps you don't know how much is remains in the tranny.
Are you going to drain it totally just so you can then know how much to put in when it goes back in the truck?
Some was in there and stayed in there, it wasn't fully drained so using this logic of putting in the required amount would have it overfilled. Unless I wanted to drain the tranny to start with, and then fill it with the required amount.
So you have to do some estimating.

Yes. :flipoff2:

Makes for easy filling, about 12~13 pumps.
Gawd I hate the smell of gear oil.
Bobzooki 03-29-2005, 07:59 AM You Sammi guys are lucky - you can't fill a Kick tranny through the shifter...

4xoddic 03-31-2005, 08:26 AM My ignorance will soon become apparent:
Had my 90 & 91 Samurais up on jackstands in the garage. Givin' 91 to brother-in-law for installing GTi engine into 90. Wanted to swap all synthetics from 90 to 91. (Yep, they're expensive, but NOT worth the trouble, LOL now.)
3rd time I've put in synthetics. Think I would've learned how by now.
With lube down my sleeve, neck & mouth (siphon, anyone?) I eventually remembered the CORRECT way to use my Mr. GoodPump Jr. (see Harbor Freight URL clone).
After pouring a little gear oil into top of pump, attach 3/8 inch ID clear tubing to inlet & outlet (SECURE w/hose clamps).
Take out the rubber plugs in floorboards. Run outlet hose thru hole & secure the hose just inside the fill hole on tranny/transfer case, riding against the top of the hole. If it rests on the bottom edge of hole, gear oil will run out along hose before case is full. (I can't recall what combo of wire ties, spring clips, etc. I eventually used.)
Place inlet hose into gear oil jug, secure hose so end is just above bottom of container but won't pull out while yer pumpin' (I used a split rubber shock stem bushing wedged into gal jug).
Set your seat in the Samurai & pump until significant other hollers that oil is running out of tranny/tc. Otherwise you have to stop & take a look once in a while.
There are 2 holes in tranny (3 including drain plug): fill & level. From recent experience, I wouldn't recommend synthetic in tranny. I had begun to think the 2nd gear syncho was goin' out until I swapped back to reg gear oil (I luv to downshift into 2nd when takin' corners).
I also used the floor plug method on the rear diff (front is easy enough to see).
I'm obviously ANAL, & there are many shortcuts to this method which will only spill gear oil until you notice. I used ALL of the methods already given, until I recalled Mr. GoodPump Jr. had to be primed. I still have half of the 2nd bag of cat litter, if anybody needs it. Brother-in-law showed me out to use a 4X4 inch block of wood to scrub out oil stains on cement with it. Have not yet tried it on the kitchen linoleum.
Happy Trails, Joe

Very good idea... even though your spelling is a bit off the wall <---PUN :laughing: We still got the gist :laughing: {EXTINGUISHER (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=extinguisher) }
EHeye 04-02-2005, 11:40 PM Didnt know you put gear oil in the transmission. Last time I checked I put MTF in. GM Synchromesh seemed to cure the old syncro grind at high RPMs, made the tranny feel really purty.
toyparts 04-04-2005, 10:23 AM I got a bad habit of turning english words of more than 6 letters into utter gibberish///////
but the fire ex. bottles work great //
i carry 2 with me when wheelin
i have oba and pump it up when needed
,,,1 with motor oil & 1 with gear oil
the bottles hold up to 250 psi and working pressure is 195 psi
you can also fill with gas and pump up to 200 psi ,,,,,,,,
makes a good pressure washer AND a GREAT FLAMETHROWER,/,/,/,/,/,/,/
