I have a 1987 YJ dana 35 with 4.10 gears,
and a 1989 XJ with a dana 35 with 3.31 gears (i believe)
I was wondering if i could ether swap out the R/P or just swap out the whole carrier?
Objective:
Lower gears in the XJ for 33's
thanx!

If I'm not mistaken you'll have to take the whole carrier, the switch occurs at 3.54 I think... other than that it should work fine. The axles are essentially the same. I'm even running the pinion yoke from a 2WD XJ on my YJ D35... it was $8 at the junk yard, so I decided to not wait on the new one I had ordered... now I have a spare.

You will have to swap the whole carrier, the break is at 3.54, of course I think a better idea would be just to swap the whole axle, be a lot easier to change a spring perch, and maybe shock mounts, than to reset up the whole ring and pinion. Or an even better idea, is find the closest PBB member to you, and take both axles over and leave them on his porch as a joke, (D35 are really not worth messing with especially on this board) they're marginal even with 33's

The only problem is the YJ 35 housing is cracked and split...

Tink. -- Sound of a Dana 35 breaking.
If something small and light like a YJ broke the Dana35, how do you expect one to survive in an XJ?

Why not get a D44 out of a 84-86 XJ/MJ. They've got 4.10's in them if they came with the 2.8L, plus its pretty much an easy swap. I do believe, though, if your D35 in your XJ is an auto its 3.55, if its a 5spd their 3.07's. Doesn't matter, if you look at a 8.8 i'd settle for a D44, close in strength, much easier to swap if you get one from a MJ/XJ. But if you plan on going to bigger tires, look into 9"

gotta agree with ROCKYXJ,
There is a junk yard about 45 min from me that has D44 XJ axles laying in his yard for 250-350$...that would be a great swap! and he right that shoud have 4.10s in them! your gonna spend all that time on the D35 for it just to:nuke:
I like the idea of putting a D35 on a PBB member's porch for a joke!.. I have one... i will have tp do that!!
