there really isnt a big differance over standard engines, maybe a few computer and smog changes. I would avoid these engines for the most part because they tend to be heavily abused and high milage. I know 2 guys with Police 'Stangs and they both coughed up head gaskets at a fairly low milage for a 5.0, around 130,000 miles.

don't know about the power, but they do sell cheap and there are some good heavy duty parts on them . I bought a Diplomat and used a bunch of parts on my old Ramcharger. Power steering cooler, etc. I only payed $150 for it running and no body damage from the Canton TX police dept. It had a buttload of miles on it though.

I think they also come standard with the high amp (100+ ?) alternator package?

According to my buddy in the police, there is nothing "fancy" about a police packaged cruiser. The only note worthy thing he mentioned was it had a high output alternator. Beyond that, he said they were the same as the car you could buy off the lot.

And after a couple of ride alongs with him, there is no way I would pay money for one of their engines. Talk about abused and put away wet:eek:

I guess that may be true if its for the Barney Fife crew.
And since when does a H.O. alternator make a "package cruiser"?!?

Most of the departments cough up for the "real deal". The basics of course include the H.O. alt, bull bars, spot lights, some use a secondary system for the lights, radio, siren, etc; beefed tranny, 'ever cool' heavy duty cooling systems, some are even "chipped".
Most of the Arizona DPS and State cars have the dual-fuel LPG conversion too!

My ex RCMP police package mustang had: Reinforced bumpers, Certified speedometer, Reinforced seat mounts, Strut tower brace, Heavy duty cooling with silicone hoses, heavy duty suspension, high output alternator, no AC, and lots of holes in the interior panels. Got it with less than 60,000 km on it. Looked like it had been treated well, had all of it's maintenece records and the body/frame had not been tweaked. For the price I paid I stole it!!

I had the specs on these engines, but lost them, but I do know they came with HO amps, higher pressure fuel pumps and regulators and I've ran across a few TBI units on ebay supposedly from these cars that are 4 barrel TBIs. There are a few companies that recond these cars and sell them to depts. that don't want to waste their money on the Fords. Do a 'Net search, one of them has a website, I'm sure they could help you out.

Also...I know on the Ford Crown Vic, that the top speed limit is greatly increased. I've been in a Crown Vic at over 140mph.

I also know that is has heavy duty cooling, suspension, alternator, brakes, and so on.

What makes a police interceptor is its increased altenator, silicon hoses , h.d. waterpump , rev limiter removed , h.d. radiator , etc as far as the motor goes they are all the same as production cars, have all the smog and so on. I have had both and they usually are turned in around 75,000 miles and have had regular maitenance with records every 5000 miles. The one I would have is the 95 caprice it came with an lt1 read awesome!!!!!!!!:smokin:

I chased and drove a '95 Caprice this weekend with 166,000 miles on it from one of the local depts., no wonder those things are so friggin fast!!!!!

Another thing you might want to look at is if the cruiser was a take home car. Rumor has it that take home cars are taken care of a lot better than those that were ran 24/7, which is a no-brainer.

I pretty sure the GMs have gear drive cams and a mechanical drive for the waterpump also.

I had a 87 and it wasn't your family grocery getter....got it off the Highway Patrol with less then 50k, was a interceptor version and the speedo registered 150 and was certified, it was heavy duty all around with a partial roll bar still inplace. It had decent power with a carb and some sort of cam that boosted the ponies on a dyno to around 395 hp at 375 lb/ft...no vette but would light them up with full gas.....was a nice ride......and got out of many tickets by the vehicles looks.......

I read in motor trend that the V10 out of the superduties will be in the 2003 or 2004 Ford Crown vic Interceptos. That might make it a little harder to outrun the cops.

I know that the Crown Vics out now are pretty slow at least the CA ones. Top speed is limited at 120. The shut off valve for the fuel pumps were very sensitive for a couple years too. Nothing like going over railroad tracks an having the car die.

Chevy's ran the LT-1.
Roller cam, mechanical drive H2O pump.

Screaming engine, tough trans in them too.

If you can find them stuff them into your rigs!

I paid $500.00 for the whole drivetrain from a wrecked 1994. 38,000miles on the
engine, tranny, harness, ecm and dash pod.

Pays to know the tow truck driver!:smokin:

So, where do I buy one?

Now you might have to use the paper. About 2 years ago you could go to the city auctions and steal them. By now I'm sure the city had sold most if not all of their chevy's. They stopped making them in 96 and at most they keep them 4-5 years. The fleet here is all fords now. With a few Camaro SS's throw in. :D
