pick a jeep, any year, any model and make it trail worthy with only 5 mods. what jeep would you pick? what parts would you pick? why? spring over does not count as 1 mod, as you have to modify alot more than one thing to get it done. get it? the article in JP "take any jeep through rubicon" got me started on this one.

i'd get a 80s cj-7 with a 258 and an auto.
1) MPI- it would run anywhere
2) 1pc. axles- cause 2pc. are weak
3) rear locker- do i need to say why?
4) winch- for those times you stop moving
5) rocker guards- cause with no lift your gonna hit your rockers
this should be a class for competition. you'd know who the better driver was for sure.

I'd take a Venezuelan build Jeep CJ-7 (~60" wide D44's Front and Rear w/ 4.10's, thankyou!) They were still making these in '91 when I was there taking care of some business for my Uncle (you may know him, his name is "Sam"?)

1. EFI Vortec V-6/4L60E swap - plenty of power but mild enough not to break parts, and fuel injected, cheating a little, but since they're both connected (and can remain connected throughout the install) -- I count that as one mod.

2. 4" Lift - one of those lift kits that come complete with shocks, brake lines, etc...

3. 36x12.50 TSL/SX tires*

4. Rear Locker**

5. Front Locker

*Unless removing sheetmetal is a Freebee then 38x12.50 TSL/SX tires

**Unless mods you can do for FREE are not counted here, then Lincoln Lock (weld) and use #4 for a Winch.

option #1-

1-8" skyjacker rock ready
2-37" super swampers

4-a winch(although that a factory option)
5- full cage
*6- a big grin as i walk over everything i can then drive to work the next day

option #2
m715-beast right out of the box - minus the 232 "lightly blowing breeze" engine

1-good seats
2-welded diffs
3-42" boggers siped and little lugs cut
4-chevy leafs for super flex action
5-1 custom built, baja 1000 race truck 700hp+ small block ford

I have to start out like monkey boy---------------- That is with a flat fender.. A 48 CJ2A to be exact... now to begin the mods----.

#1* swap the original L-head for a 2.2 Turbo II to gain FI and increase torque and hp
#2* swap the original T90 for later model 5spd to get the OD and lower 1st gear.
#3* swap the D18 fpr a D300 for more strength and lower low range
#4* swap the D27 front axle for a D30 narrow trac to gain disc brakes but keep the 5.38 gears
#5* swap the D41 for a D44 or amc 20 narrow trac to mate up with the D300 ie centered diff also keeping 5.38 gears..

* I do not know if each of these would count as 1 mod or more than 1 mod according to the criteria.. If they count as more than more than 1 mod start dropping mods from the bottom till you get it down to 5..These are the actual mods I am performong on my Willys in addition to adding rear disc brakes.power booster and MC from a Caddilac.. will also change to more modern steering system in the future hopefully power..

I definitely agree with eastcoast strongarm on what vehicle to start with. The TJ Rubicon is definitely the best stock platform Jeep ever produced. Then I would:

1. 6" Rubicon Express Exteme Duty kit (or is that 5.5", who gives a sh*t)
2. sawzall enough for 37" SSRs
3. 15x10 Eaton beadlocks with 3.25" backspacing (black of course)
4. the new Warn 8274 winch
5. 4.88 gears and lockers (c'mon, I counted the WHEELS for chrissake!)

Either way, that's got to be more than one mod -- you'd need to widen the whole Jeep to fit that mother under there. That is one WIDE engine... I think in a narrow track CJ, the tires would just about rub the valve covers.. :D

Choice of mods depends on your purpose, of course. I could live with several of the above configurations, but here's a different one for you. This is for a canoer who works all the time and has to make the most of his limited time off. It's got to be fast getting out of the city, a good highway driver but capable of reaching the most obscure launch spots on all the good rivers, low maintenance and reliable:

New jeep TJ
1. Souped up motor
2. 15K winch (for wall climbing)

start with any jeep:
1. trade for 72 bronco with 200 6 cylinder, and factory 4.56 gears

3. sawsall to fit 36" tires, along with sawsall to rocker panels, and bottom corners of front and rear
4. 36" swampers
5. weld- rear diff
(if you don't count the sawsall action use #3 for a front detroit

5 mods, and it makes a truck that I'd be willing to take through the rubicon, johnson valley (but not all of the trails, unless a winch was around on another truck in the group), to moab, tellico, pretty much anywhere...

ok, I was counting welding as a freebie, but if we're playing like that, skip the rockstompers, with the factory 6"rims I don't need beadlocks anyways:D As for the 435 it comes as a kit, just like your MPI, or others "lift kits", or atlas transfercases. Maybe being used to jeeps you are used to having to swap everything around:D but on bronco's it's pretty simple (it helps to not have to combine parts from every manufacturer to get a decent rig...the 435 bolts to the stock bellhousing, uses the stock clutch, and stock crossmember, a 1" adapter (comes with the tranny) bolts to the back of it, and the bronco adapter housing, and dana 20 t-case bolt right to that. the only thing that requires some alterations is that since I specced a 6 cylinder truck the rear driveline will need to be shortened, and possibly lengthen the front (although you can probably wheel it with the stock length front shaft). If I had used a v-8 truck I wouldn't even need that, since it stacks up stock length in the v-8 trucks. Since you can buy the whole thing as a kit, it fits the same criteria as you've used elsewhere, and is alot more 1 mod than the stretching TJ wheelbases to 110" mentioned elsewhere...lesse here, fab custom framerail extensions, fab custom suspension, extend rear driveshaft, custom brake lines, etc...so :flipoff2:
BTW, I wish I still had my flatty too, but it had way more than 6 mods to make it a capable wheeler...

Take my '60 CJ5 with a PTO, 5.38's and a twin stick Dana:

1. Lift 2.5" (lift kit, one mod, right?)
2. 35's (does a sawzall job count as it's own mod?)
3. long shaft for the T90
4. Dauntless V6
5. AA T90-Dauntless adapter

I suppose welding the gears would count as #6? BTW, If the thing came with an engine in it rather than a big ol' gaping hole like when I bought it, the list would be:

1. Lift 2.5" (lift kit, one mod, right?)
2. 35's (does a sawzall job count as it's own mod?)
3. Full Cage
4. 5 point harness
5. hand throttle (one mod buying it in a kit? :))

I'd still count on welding the gears as labor rather than changing out a part...

1.4 inch lift
2.Sawzall Fenders
