I have a '73 fj40 with a Chevy V8. My 4 speed tranny is slipping out of 1st and 3rd while cruising. I'm looking to see if it is cheeper to just buy a reconditioned tranny. Or might anyone have some ideas on what is wrong and what a good fix is? Transmissions are NOT my strong point! What is involved in a sm465 change over and anyone have $$$ figures for a blueprint?

Can anyone tell me how to see what tranny is in there now?? Where can I look to get a type and number?

Also If I goto a 465, what and how much $$$ will be involved in getting it back on the road ie...(bell housing, clutch, transfer, drivelines, seals, adapters... ). I'm trying to retain as much equipment as possible in trying to keep the cost down.

I agree with Jimmy, but if you never wheel yours, just buy a used 4 speed and save some $$.

sounds like syncros
with all the drivetrain swaps being done you should be able to find one cheap and local.
I personally have 15x 4 speeds sitting on the floor, would you like a bakers dozen????
Up here the 4 speeds are worth between$100 and $200 CDN

Yes, and it is not just the cheap replaceable bronze synchro ring that is bad; it is the entire synchro assembly including the hub and clutch gear and possibly the first and third gears, bushings and main shaft. It isn't economical to rebuild or replace this stuff, so just get a good used 4sp or better yet, get a sm420.

Thanks to all of you who responded. This gives me some ideas to work with. I would like to put a 465 in but with it having the bell housing for the 4 speed I think I might buy another one for now.
