: Homemade D60 drive flanges
Slagburn 02-20-2002, 11:01 PM Haven't done it, so I hope you're not looking for pics :flipoff2:
I'm gonna go with the D70 35 sp stubs (3-82-871, $65 at Randy's R&P) and have the Dodge external bolt-on lockout setup. :rainbow: So, couldn't you just get some regular 35 spline 60 side gears, make a plate to bolt to the bearing hub, and weld 'em together? Problems with spacing/ lack of snap ring/ metallurgy or any reason NOT to try this?
I'm on a damn tight budget and don't want to pay Dynarape prices, $250
Well?
Rock Taxi 02-20-2002, 11:15 PM Crap, why didn't I think of that.
Sounds like a good plan if it will all fit in the hub. Guess you could turn the drive flanges / spider gears down though.
Dang good idea.
Ed
Its a good idea. GOAT 1 was tellin me he was gonna get a batch done.
Aggro 02-21-2002, 06:07 AM I have done that with a 30 spline internal drive flange and a 35 spline dana 70 side gear- worked fine. turned the center out of the flange and ground the teeth off the side gear, pressed them together and welded. whala!
GOAT1 02-21-2002, 06:21 AM What are the OEM spines, 30?. I have a 35 spline broach and can broach them for you.
pcorssmit 02-21-2002, 07:40 AM Can you broach out the 30 spline Spicer (internal, OE Chevy) hubs? If so, how much? I was just getting ready to order the Warns.
Pete
GOAT1 02-21-2002, 08:46 AM Possibly, I would assume that they are heat-treated, and you can't broach anything that is already heat-treated, it would ruin your broach. To broach that you would have to anneal them, broach and re-heat treat. The problem is you have no idea what the material it is, so you can't re-heat treat it properly, and by the time you have all this done, it would be cheaper to but the 35 spline ones.
A better alternative would be to just make a new 35 spline internal gear to replace the 30 spline piece so you can convert your 30 spline hubs to 35 spline. I would be interested in doing this if I made a few at a time, Is there any market for these? and how much could you pay for that part to justify not buying a whole new hub?

Where do you get spline broaches? I've found square, hex, and a few other shapes, but have yet to find spline ones.
And since I'm likely about to need such a beastie while I work on my 60 front weirdo setup, it'd sure be nice to just get it once and not mess with having to send stuff out.
GOAT1 02-21-2002, 12:04 PM You have to have a broach made to what ever spline you want, nobody really stocks them because they are always different. Broaces cost about $1200 to have made and you need a big machine to pull them.

Pull or push broaches? I've seen tons of push broaches, usually square, and I've got a 20T press, but nothing capable of pulling that hard. Who do ya have make a broach at all, though? We've gotten lotsa custom taps, but never a custom broach.
GOAT1 02-21-2002, 12:27 PM Broaches for this type of operation are usually pull broaches, and would be about 3 ft. long depending on the length of cut required. Our broaching machine is about 15 ft long and is rated at 15 tons. There are broaching job shops that you can send your parts to have broached. Most of the broach shops make their own broaches and can make them for you.
mytzlflick 02-21-2002, 01:17 PM can someone post a pic of a spline broach? I can't really get my head around how they work, is it just a huge splined rod you yank thru or?????

ORU told me they could respline them for $75/each, I didn't ask what process they use. I can get new Warns for around $180/pair. The advantage to resplining is that you can keep the Spicer hubs, instead of the Warns. I had an offer to have them done on a wire EDM machine (freebie), but no longer good, should have done it. The only big plus I see to the Warns is the warranty, though supposedly I'll be more likely to need it than with the Spicers.

CAPT.THROTTLE 02-21-2002, 02:06 PM I may have missed this but...How are you planning on pulling the stub shaft tight up against the seal to prevent water and debris from getting into the bearings? It was my understanding that this reason is why Warn offers rear drive flanges and not fronts.
GOAT1 02-21-2002, 02:07 PM I forgot about wire EDM, that would probably be to best way to re-work the oem hubs but it would cost the same as a new set of Warns.

Only if you've got to pay for time on the wire! ;)
Slagburn 02-21-2002, 03:17 PM I don't know about the sealing thing, haven't gotten that far yet. I need to get all the 60 junk in one place so I can stare at it for a while, figure why it would or wouldn't work. I'm sure there's a way- besides on most frontends there's not a real tight fit between the clip on the shaft, and the hub body, so there's not much preload going on there. Maybe a felt seal of some sort?
CAPT.THROTTLE 02-21-2002, 04:09 PM I wouldn't completely agree with that. I run the 35 spline stub shafts with Warn hubs and the retaining clip that pulls the stub shaft outward broke and filled the hub with water. Everything rusted out, so I took things apart and put back together in a permanently locked position, until someone comes up with a suitable drive flange or I have enough money to fork out for another set of hubs.

It wouldn't have, but would now. No more g-jobs. :(
