We are workin on a Bronco II or whats left of one. It has the stock 2.9 and 5 speed with BW tcase. The owner wants to go to an automatic w/ the 2.9 or hopefully an auto with the 4.0 out of an explorer. The autos in the explorers are crap. Whet else will bolt up to the 4.0 or the 2.9? I think the blocks are different patterns??

only real option is a C-5, or put the C-5 bell a C-4 and use that.
Or a TH700 with adapter plate.

Yeah, the C5 is about it without getting into highly custom shit. The 2.9L & 4.0L do share the same bellhousing patterns though.

The later A4LD thats mated to 4.0Ls is definitely better than earlier ones from the mid-late '80s. As with most OD transmissions, they did go through some growing pains. They never did exactly turn into something that can be called "good & reliable" though. Axle gearing would play a very large role in how long it'll live.

Search for 410Fortune on explorerforum.com, he did this conversion and is now converting to a 5.0

Any A4LD is complete crap. The later models are updated crap and just a little bit better than a bunch of rubber bands wrapped around some PVC stuffed in a coffee can.

You have 2 options for an auto behind the 4 liter-

1- C5 bellhousing with a C4

2- Chebby 700R4 with super high dollar adapters

I did the c5 to 4.0 But I put all the c4 parts in it and it works very well in the buggy.

anybody got a C5 they wanna part with? We were hopin to get this figured out before VROC this weekend but it looks like we'll be on the rocks with the 5spd. BTW the BII is now clemson orange, a little wider, and on 35 Xterrains.
