: SAS w/ D30?
034x4 03-30-2005, 06:44 PM I'm getting a dana 30 off of a ZJ this weekend. For free. Is it worth it to do the SAS now, with the 30, and run the 30 until i buy a D44?
BTW I have a 2003 ranger edge 4x4.
I want to run at least 37's after the swap. Could i build up the 30 (alloys shafts etc.) to handle those big of tires, or would it not even be worth it.
MXPAZ 03-30-2005, 07:51 PM I think it would be worth it. yeah you can build up the 30 to hold up to 37's. However, you can break anything.

Not worth it IMHO. If you plan on running anything larger than 33's. The shaft's are tiny, u-joints miniscule, it'll break. Hold out for the 44, and your still pushing that with 37's. Your gonna have to chromo and CTM that too to hold up to any kind of hard wheeling.
mudtoy67 03-30-2005, 09:59 PM I think it would be worth it as long as you don't spend any money on the axle itself. Everything else will stay the same as far as your springs and steering when you switch to the 44. That will at least get you rolling.

It seems to me he's gonna build the 30, chromo and joints, then do the same thing with a 44 later. Why spend the money twice
The 30 won't hold up to 37's for long, even with all the upgrades. Why do you think everyone is going to 60's. Even 44's are weak with low gears and big tires
redranger4.0 03-30-2005, 10:48 PM im doing an sas on a 2000 i decided to skip the 30 and go right for the 44 for now. im going to run a stock waggy d44 with bronco 9" rear. im going to run a 36" tsl. i say dont even bother with the 30. its not worth it. i go tmy front axle complete with steering for 200. eventually im going to narrow a front 60. the 9" id imagine should be fine with 31 spline alloy's and a spool. the waggy is low pinion so we will see how long that lasts.

4x4junkie 03-30-2005, 10:57 PM The ring & pinion in a 30 would not stand up to 37s well at all, especially under a Ranger, which is significantly heavier than the Jeep.
If its just temporary, at the most, throw some junkyard 5-297X shafts in it, but nothing more.
85yota350 03-31-2005, 12:36 AM Go with a Dana 44 up front, i have a Dana 30 axle under the front of my 03 ranger. It works alright. I've broken the following parts with 16/35/15 boggers: 1 front driveline, u-joints in the axle shafts, 1 ring and pinion, and all the spider gears. Also broke 1 front driveline when i had 38.5's on the truck. It would be alright for casual wheelin but if your locked up front/rear your gonna break shit!
FordCarnage 03-31-2005, 05:58 AM How did you address the rack and peanut steering issue? I don't see how you can do this swap for little to no money in a Ranger that new. Oh yeah, fawk the 30.
XJ_ranger 03-31-2005, 08:12 AM for what its worth - XJ guys (like myself) avoid using the D30 with more than 33" tires...
the unit hubs cant take all that weight to well and generaly end up going ot rather quickly.
Franklin 03-31-2005, 10:38 AM Rule of thumb is: if you can shit turds bigger than the axle shaft dont run it :D

haha
the rack and pinion is solved by using a IFS toyota steering box.
85yota350- you have a white edge right.
034x4 03-31-2005, 08:13 PM No i'm not going to build up the 30 at all. I'm getting it for free, so I was going to go ahead and do the swap now, with the 30, so i have everything set up. That way when i get a 44 i can build it and all I have to do is swap it in.

Or a 1st generation ranger box.
034x4 04-01-2005, 07:33 AM ok ok. I was asking if it would be worth it to build the 30, i'm not going to now.
ya smart ass.

Just do it right the first time, use Rockwells. :flipoff2:
Rerard 04-01-2005, 09:32 AM Its not like 44's are expensive or hard to find, there really is no reason to go with a 30 unless your getting the deal of a century on a built one I guess but even then its prolly better to sell it for a profit before you grenade it and have a worthless chunk of metal.
As far as the rack and peanut thats pretty easy, just mount a steering box and get a draglink+pitman arm that fits. I dont think its really any more expensive to SAS a new ranger than anything else, the only difference is fabing up some extra brackets which doesnt cost much if your do it yourself.
trevelyn1015 04-03-2005, 11:51 AM ^ this man knows his ranger's...
good advice...
those d30's are too little...
