A buddy of mine can get me a cam at dealer cost. Now the thing is I have a choice between stage 1, 2 or 3. He is unsure of lift and duration times for each stage. I am hoping to get a bit more torque out of the 4.0l in the low rpm range. One of the mechanics at the dealership recomends that I pick up the stage 3... I realize that without specific duration and lift times it is hard to reccomend a cam. Does anyone have any experience with the mopar performance cams and if so what is the difference between "stages".

too much work for the gains....your right it's torque not horsepower for off road. If ya think you need this, maybe you just need to go to steeper gears....the I-6's make plenty of torque already.

My experience is with different motors and the gains don't happen till higher RPMs and usally don't meet advertised gains unless the heads are also ported to breathe abit better and the intake and exhaust can keep up with the extra flows.

For low end torque have you considered a heavier flywheel?

Also a more restrictive exhaust with smaller diameter pipe can help out the lower end but give some up on the upper end.

I have never used a stage 1, Used 3 of the stage 2's and like them alot. Had a friend use a stage 3, sucks at high altitude. The manifold vacuum at idle is so low the pcm couldn't adjust properly. I live at high altitude, so my experiances may not be the same as at sea-level. My price on the cam and lifter kit under $100. The hard part is finding the matching springs. (6 month national back order) They make 2 styles, conical and cylinderical. The clyinderical style will also require new keepers. Don't install this cam without the springs.

I don't think I would waste my time putting it in a used engine. But doing a rebuild when cam and lifters are to be changed, you can't beat it.

Any machine shop worth a damn should be able to set you up with an off the shelf or slightly custom application for the springs if they have cam specs.
One of my engines was setup for a certain lift and duration cam, I swapped to a bigger cam and it ran about twenty minutes before the spring pressure wiped the lifters' bottoms off.
(Yes of course this was with break-in lube, fresh lifters yadda yadda) :flipoff2:

Anyway with only the stage 1 cam or the Crane 204/214 cam stock springs still work fine, don't know after that.

Well in terms of the price i can get the cam and lifters for about 150 canadian. To be honest with you I don't expect a huge gain but at least a noticable one. In term of the springs, is there a part number or do I have to go to a machine shop? When I have the intake off I might take it over to my buddies shop to port it. Anything else i can do while its apart to give it a "boost"?
