: Stretching a TJ

Sorry if this question sounds vague but this has been on my mind now that I have my project TJ and have wondered if anyone has looked into this.

Could someone give me the basics on what it would take to stretch a TJ to about the length if not a little longer than a CJ8? I'm talking chopping it in the bed, then adding in the frame and body panels so there is more room in the rear plus extended wheelbase.

What materiels would you use to make the frame and the body panels for the gap? Rather than that of course what else would need to be done rather than a new driveshaft and extensions for brakes.

Thanks!

Here's an article on one stretched like you want. http://www.extreme4x4.com/vol5num3/stretch/index.html
Also do a search on Rock Taxi, He stretched a CJ-5 and posted some pic's and info on it.

Cool thanks I'll search Rock Taxi. That article didn't give me any insight into what materials were used and what needed to be done, looking for more technical articles.

Thanks a lot though!

Sure thing. You'll definitely get more info from Rock Taxi.

I'm planning to do the same late next fall. Add about 20"s behind the the driver and in the wheel well.

Goal is to track down a Scrambler fneder flares for the rear, and YJ flares for the front.

Then, hack the hardtop. That'll be fun, but worth it.
Post pics when you're done.:D

There was a TJ that was stretched by Sunray I think. The guy was at the Dakota Territory Challenge last year. He stretched it in the cowl area. I like the idea of stretching the body more. My CJ2A is stretched in the hood area and makes it look out of balance. Just $.02

I know it's not really what you want to do, but it could help.

I have followed this guys rig... and read other post he has responded too. It appears he is a humble MASTER at craftmanship with experince in building 200mh fast cars. I think he is an engineer in aerospace or something. His rig is awsome.

I saw a guy in Farmington last year that had lengthen his TJ forward. He added another cowling in front of the windshield, and streched the frame. The TJ was red and had a LT-1. I think he was from TX. Sorry NO PIC.

AEV Conversions (http://aev-conversions.com/gallery.html) stretches TJs to 104" or 112" wheelbase. Might call them and see if you can pick their brain.

Yep, I took Bob some parts and was checking it out...Bob is a genius at fab work. Your TJ is a work of art.

Saw that dude at last years palo duro challenge... It was pretty crazy looking. He rolled it forwards the second day and almost completely crushed his cage... It wasnt much more than a stock setup w/ front cage added, not enough to support it in a rollover especially with 60's and 42's . Other than that it was badass

Do you have to stretch the body if you want to extend a TJ to 100" or can you do this just by doing a lil' cutting in the rear fenders?

Just a little tiny bit of cutting will suffice ;) :p

Does that thing still fit on an 83" wide trailer? I'm worried mine wont fit after I swap some full width D60s. I know it will all come down to backspacing and brakes.

That TJ's stretch approach is pretty similar to the way I stretched mine.

I'll save the bandwidth. Check out my websites

Don't bother. The TJ fender openings are larger than either of these flares will cover.

Most of the TJ stretches I have seen were in front of the firewall. This makes room for LT1 with plenty of working room. I am sure there is a company making the Cowl sheetmetal extensions just like they do for the CJ. Contact Sunray Engineering in Weatherford, TX.

Yes Ed.
There is a company that makes cowl extensions. We make them here and weld them too the cowl. Mine got finished this week while I was in Cruces. If any want to see pictures of the TJ we built stretched in the front check out the web site, we also just finished a CJ stretched the same way, pics to be on the site this week.
Ed, did you get your new motor running yet?

Cool Lance, I need to talk to you about those cowls. :)

No, no damn luck on the motor. Idles fine, nothing else. I sent you a download of some run data from the ECM, but could see nothing grossly out of whack. Did you not get the data?

Looks like I am going to need more help. I am going to rework the distributor (the big problem with poor idle earlier in the project) and if no dice, it might just be time to "Sunray-It".

Did anyone get a price on the cowl?

I wheeled with the red one in Clayton, that is a tricked out jeep. The nice thing about the strech on that ride is you don't have to modify the soft top or hard top, not to mention the extra room under the hood for more horses!

Looks good....but..... i think when I stretch mine I'll just move the front axle forwards, flatfender the front, move the rear axle back, then chop the rear from the top of the wheelwell back. Seen it dont before, looks good, and you can't beat the approach angle gain.

The scrambler rear flares look like yj rear flares, sorta squared of. Where as the cj5 and 7 are rounded.

Yep, exactly like that. I'll do it eventually, as soon as I have the money to make it trail duty only and I find a RC 60 :) Also going to move the gas tank straight up and locate the rear axle far enough back that there's zero overhang.

that's exactly my next mod, except I'm gonna build a custom fuel cell, as I don't need all of the volume in the stock tank & don't want to lose too much cargo space. once I get all of that tweaked out the D60's go under... :D
