: Climb, the movie...

After viewing any of the videos by the many great producers out there, I have taken the time to post up so people can learn more about it and consider buying a copy for themselves. RP Films has always been on top with their amazing amount of footage captured from angles even Chris Geiger wouldn't put himself into knowingly...BFE has always had a production style that shows Jeremy's skills as an artist in the editing suite...and Suburban White Guys always seem to make us all laugh with their on the edge style of capturing the lunacy/idiocy in us all.
Now enters a new name in the world of rockcrawling production and I have to say I was amazed. GotRocks debuted their first production titled "Climb" in Moab with huge fanfare and a 30 foot tall movie screen right on Main Street in Moab. It opened on the night of the Dirt Sports party and if you know anything about Dirt Sports, you don't want to miss a minute of the free food and drinks...Climb started playing at the same time we were heading across the parking lot to Dirt Sports...we were pulled in by the movie, and without even thinking once about the party we were missing, we stayed until the ending credits were done running. That was how good the movie was. Don't get me wrong...it is not chock full of the hairball action we're used to with Haulin or Crawlin...however, it was full of a great story combined with footage directly relating to the words you are hearing. Truely, using narration by many teams to guide you through the history of the sport, ending with SuperCrawl III. I think it was "made for TV" as it was a story people would love to see. Not just off-roaders and hardcore enthusiasts, but anyone that enjoys the spirit of sport.
There was a moment in there where I thought to myself, "OH SHIT!" It was the section about Nick's accident at SuperCrawl. It was heart wrenching to watch and during the first few seconds, I didn't know if I was angry at them for including one of our sport's worst moments, or if they just might pull off a good story that actually makes a difference in the movie. By the time that section was over, I was proud of Nick and had forgotten completely about the risk of showing that footage. Even the most uninformed of viewers will most likely have the same feeling after that piece so I want to commend GotRocks for showing the risks of our sport in a way that is NOT "Real TV" or "MAX X". They actually told Nick's story and told it well...GotRocks danced a dangerous line with that piece...THANKS for not fucking that up guys!
So, my feelings on this video are it is an amazing documentary put together in a way that I have been waiting to see. My favorites will still be the hardcore action videos that have been around for so long but let's face it, those are for US... "CLIMB" is for everyone!

I wish I could have seen it.

I know you know this Dustin, but this is what we need to do for the sport - We are reaching a fine line with the technicality of the courses and the design of the vehicles. I don't see any huge leaps forward like TINY in 2003. The crawling and the competition sets the groundwork - now WE need to tell a story. We need to develop rivalry, tradition, team image, and drama on the course. I am not suggesting that we turn it into professional wrestling but we do need to create substance behind the events.

Some video's and TV shows show the sport as a roll over, carnage fest. That is a freak show that will die a quick death. It sounds like CLIMB told a story and we should concentrate on doing the same. Glad it was a great film, hopefully we can learn from it.

I missed the movie in Moab, so I bought the DVD at the vendor's fair. I felt the movie was a little slow paced for my taste. However the segment with Nick got me choked up.

I heard it was pretty good, much more narritave than the other off-road DVDs out there, but I hadn't heard any info other than the name before now. But even knowing the production comanies name didn't turn anything up on google. Does anyone have contact info on how to get a copy??? I'd really like to check it out.

Keep your eye on Gotrocks4x4.com

This is all the info I could find there to answer your question:

Look for the release of “Climb” available first at Moab Easter Safari. You can also find it at www.gotrocks4x4.com, Wild Kat Dist. Media Play, Best Buy and in all 4x4 shops around.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Our goal is to produce films that tell a story, capture personalities, andhave a mainstream appeal. Although it isn't a carnage flick, we think that I is just as entertaining.

The challenge with approaching an audience without hard carnage footage is to help them understand Rockcrawling as a motorsport and connect with the people who are the teams. Only when they truley understand that it is a competition and not an exhibition will they appreciate good driving as much as or more than carnage. We delirberatley substituted carnage with what we considered is good driving skills and techniques. Carnage has its time and place, but we have found that there is so much passion in this industry. It transends the carnage. It's the passion that everybody is attracted to. There are a lot of incredible stories to tell about dedication, teamwork, sacrifice, hard-work, success, failure, sacrifice, etc... If only we can somehow tell the stories and let the carnage happen along the way, as it happens.

Got Rocks 4x4 will gauge the success of this video by the effect it will have in helping people better understand rockcrawling as a Motorsport and feel some connection with its great personalities.

Johnny G, Bart Jacobs, John and Nate Williams, Nick Socha, and Carl Whitmore were KEY to this production and I think you will appreciate the insight they offer to the audience on the sport.

Thanks again ya'll. See you in Salt Lake!
PS- Brad, your driving on The Wall turned out to be incredible footage!

We will have about 10 of them by the end of today. We probably won't have them in time to ship today, but could ship them as early as Monday.

We're working on getting more than our initial 10 copies ASAP.

We all know John is a great speaker and represents the sport well and the others did a nice job too, but my kudos go out to Carl Whitmore...he did an amazing job of telling a story and I hope to see more of him in future productions.

Thanks Dustin for the kind words about our movie. As far as who deserves credit for the Nick Socha piece... it's all about Nick. He was the only person close to it even willing to talk. I called several other people in the industry and got blank stares, animosity, and no-return phone calls. Maybe I didn't call the right people, but sure got a brick wall from everyone else. Nick forwarded all the photos he had of the accident and was willing to talk about the details. Our main goal with the piece was to truely promote the sport and look at the accident as an experience for all of us to build on for the future. I only wish I could have put more in the movie of what we talked about during the 1-hour phone interview.

Sincere thanks to Nick and to you Dustin, again, for the kind words. I hope everyone in the industry gets a chance to see this film.

Thanks
Christian

I have found only 2 of them, but if there are any inconsistancies with the drivers' names/titles in the movie please understand that it was edited between 10 pm and 3 am over the period of 4 months with lots of Full Throttle helping out a few guys who, besides 1, haven't been avid 4x4 guys until this project.

Thanks for your understanding! I hope that it is being recieved well. Sometimes silence is good... :)
