: Pick this drivetrain apart. What would you change and why?

This will be going in a 88XJ.

I'm at the point I want deeper gears than my 30 will allow. I'll also need an SYE if I get more lift, so here's what I'm thinking please pick this apart.

TPI350
700R4
Dana 300
pass. drop 60 front
14b rear

I've got the 350/700R4 sitting in storage already so that's not a problem there. The tranny will need a new 4wd output shaft (it's 2w) and an adapter for the 300. The 300 gets a new input shaft and twin sticked. I'm thinking Novak for the adapters. The axles will be easy enough to get. I'm thinking 5:13's, welded rear and maybe welded front. Since I'll be twin sticked will the welded front work or would I be better off with a locker?

As far as the engine goes should I just freshen it up or go whole hog and stroke it? Since I'll have exhaust manifolds/headers on both sides will I run into any problems with a passenger side drop 300/60 combo? Should have the same amount of room on either side, no?

Auto trannies are black magic to me. Should I put a shift kit in it? Get a different torque converter? Any advice here is greatly welcomed.

As far as suspension I'm thinking leafs front and rear. Possible radius arm setup up front.

So pick this apart and tell me what you would change and why? Thanks!

A D60 rear would give alot more clearance than a 14 bolt.

Check the General 4x4 forum, some people were having problems with their 700R4. I know you already have it so unless you buy a new (used) one you don't have much choice though.

both the 60 and 14 bolt will be shaved. I'm not worried about that...

OK my .02$

TPI -perfect...make sure you spring for the 400$ radiator or it wont stay cool
700-R4 -perfect...just make sure u get a deep pan kit and a cooler
Dana 300-perfect...2 low will be nice....could use a 4-1 kit but with the auto not reqd
pass drop 60 front-perfect...make sure it has kingpins, hubs
14b rear-?ok?- my choice would be a 60 (better choice of gears)

Welded front and rear-perfect (make sure they are welded correctly, and that you have front hubs, 2 low

Leafs-go to hell you are customizing everything else why not do 4 link and coils ???

5.13's cool but what size tire ?

The exhaust turns under the engine and travels on the pass side under the 4.0. Probably need to be rerouted to clear the front Driveshaft. Nothing that can't be solved though.

Tire size will be 37-38 range eventually. As far as why leafs? Simple, CHEAP, and effective. Going to try and build this thing on a budget as much as possible.

"Since I'll be twin sticked will the welded front work or would I be better off with a locker?"

I would use a detroit in the front. Its too hard to turn with the front end welded of with an arb. I know it has a twin stick, but still unless you do hydraulic assist you are going to hate it. I am talking from a Hammers point of view. With both the front and rear welded the drive train is going to be in such a bind when you turn that if you try to pull the front out, you will not be able to do it.

Sounds like a good combination to me. I prefer manual trannies myself.
The only weak link I noticed, D300 is a great box but with high horse v-8 and 38's I would upgrade the tailshaft.
