posted this in the newbie setcion - no one even has looked at it...

hopeing to get some help...

hello,
I am working on my ford 9" full width into my cherokee (pics and tech so far here (http://www.opiebennett.com/rearaxleprep.htm) )

It has a bad pinion seal so i aim to change that before i complete the swap - no point in putting in a leaky diff and getting oil all over the "new" rear end.

I plan on re-gearing in next 6 months anyway, so all new bearings will go in at that point - so im not interested in that - just retaining flud and keeping the existing bearings around for long enough to get to that 6 month mark.

Anyone have a write up or instructons on this? will it mess up my pinion depth?

any tips or tricks that i should keep in mind?
I have a 150ft-lb torque wrench and a 300ft-lb wrench - will i need any other special tools?

thanks in advance...

I'm also planning on a new nodular 3rd later in the year but wanted to change the seal now. I searched a bunch of threads and decided to follow one guy advice. If the crush washer, bearings and yoke will not be changed this should work. Pull the yoke, install the new sleeve (I also needed a ready sleeve due to major yoke wear), clean threads, add a little locktite, torque to 75-80 lbs and then back off the nut 90 degrees. I've put a couple hundred miles on mine since then with no leaking or wining. Good luck.

anytime you pull something apart that can alter the pattern on the gear you should recheck the pattern. pulling the pinion and taking the yoke off to change the seal could alter the pattern, but more importantly it could alter the preload on the pinion bearings. at the very least you should recheck the preload with an inchpounds wrench before you just reinstall and take off in it.

it's your truck, but I would check it....cheap insurence
