hey guys. i dont know much about what ive got so i am trying to get educated. i have a 96 ranger 2.3l motor and tranny with a mustang head in a suzuki samurai. i fabbed up a trans yoke with a u joint to go to the stock sammy tcase. i had some questions on the tranny. correct me if i am wrong i think it is the m5r1
1-what are gear ratios for 1st thru 5th gear
2-can those gears be changed
3-how does ford set up the ranger 4x4 (tcase-is tranny different-what is setup)-any pics of trans and tcase or whatever.
4-is there an automatic that will bolt up to that motor.-any pics
5-typical weaknesses of tranny
thanks sorry for all the questions. please someone have some pics
feel free to email pics to my email. thanks again.

A '96 2.3L tranny is the Mazda M5OD-R1

Ratios:
3.72:1
2.25:1
1.50:1
1.00:1
0.79:1
3.40:1 (R)

The biggest weakness is the shiftrail plugs sometimes tend to leak, and if enough fluid is lost, the trans will eat itself. Outside of that, its a pretty durable unit (especially behind a little 4cyl).

No, no gear swaps available (you already have the lower-ratio gearset).
Rangers use a married BW1354 T-case. If you were to convert it, you'd need the extension housing and output shaft.

Auto options are relatively plentiful. The 2.3 was used in anything from rangers where it got an A4LD (POS) A C3 or C4 will also bolt up as that was used behind the carb'd version of that engine in the pinto's in the late 70's
