: Waterproof stereo?
offroadr35 02-21-2002, 01:11 PM Does anyone have a good solution for a waterproof stereo in their truck? I have no top and no doors and i keep the truck outside. I know companies like Alpine make waterproof speakers...does anyone make a waterproof head unit? How about a waterproof CB?
Thanks,
Steve
road1will 02-21-2002, 01:12 PM put everything in a big ass ziplock bag and just push buttoms/turn knobs through it :D
Ramstein 02-21-2002, 01:19 PM Go to a marine shop or check out sites like this

Ramstein 02-21-2002, 01:21 PM This unit kicks ass!!!

Rip DeLips 02-21-2002, 01:31 PM Yup, marine/boating supply houses will have 'water-proof' stereos. Some supposedly have extra shock protection to prevent skipping. Don't know how well they work though. I was going to install a marine grade JVC a few weeks ago...but the stereo I was running crapped out and I was leaving to go out of town. Gotta have tunes to travel, so I stuffed in the 1st stereo I got my hands on.
Try these

offroadr35 02-21-2002, 02:05 PM anyone actually own any of these? I was looking at this...

Do you think it is completely shitty? Will I be able to hear it over the wind and engine noise? I'd love to get a first hand review before I drop $200

Rip DeLips 02-21-2002, 02:12 PM I'm in boats a LOT. Haven't seen that particular brand in use. I've used plenty of the JVC's though. That's what I was going to put in my rig before I had to make a hasty move. If Overton's doesn't have JVC, try the other link for Boaters World. The best bet would be the JVC with some quality outdoor/waterproof speakers from Bose or some other reputable company...if'n ya got the $$$ to do it.
If you end up getting the JVC, how about letting me/us know how it does on CD skip? Good luck.
chris demartini 02-21-2002, 02:15 PM Here's a company that makes some good speakers http://www.polyplanar.com/.
offroadr35 02-21-2002, 02:15 PM the JVCs are a lot more expensive. This is just a trail rig and i'm sure the stuff will get destroyed so i really just want the cheapest stuff that'll be acceptable.

Polarweasel 02-21-2002, 04:29 PM Since you run no top/doors, what about locking the stereo in a console? I think that Tuffy consoles are pretty water-resistant, and they lock. I'd rather have my stereo locked up, 'cause even cheap ones get expensive after a few get ripped off! :D
Something like this sort of thing (http://www.tuffyproducts.com/consoles/deluxe.html), maybe?
offroadr35 02-21-2002, 04:51 PM i don't have enough room between my seats for one of those tuffy boxes otherwise i'd definitely get one. People don't really steal things here though so i'm not THAT worried.

RockHound 02-21-2002, 10:26 PM I just bought one of thesoe plastic covers for boating and put it over the facce plate of my stereo and it seemed to wrok just fine in my open top Jeep. Cheap too!!

Either that, or not that bright... :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Just kidding. A locking box would be nice, though. I hope I've got enough room for one when I'm done fawking up -- I mean improving! -- my interior. :rasta:
Grandpa Jeep 02-22-2002, 07:57 AM I'm using an older pioneer removeable chassis stereo/cassette player in my Jeep. If water get's too high, I'll just pull it out and move it to higher ground.
CAPT.THROTTLE 02-22-2002, 08:00 AM A lot of the top tournament boat manufacturers are using a new Clarion CD Player head unit that kicks ass. I haven't found any pictures on the web, but it has a water tight door that closes over the CD slot and it also has a water proof wired remote that Calabria mounts on the transom of their wakeboard boat.
offroadr35 02-22-2002, 08:13 AM i saw that clarion unit, it looks sweet. $400 though. There is NO WAY i'm putting that much into a stereo for my trail rig. I think i'm just gonna buy one of those cheep prepackaged head unit/speakers/wires things and hope it's halfway decent.

Grim Reaper 02-22-2002, 12:51 PM I'm looking for a solution also. I think I will be building a over head like the tuffy. As long as the truck doesn't go over it should stay dry. Reaching up means the water will run down your arm instead of into the unit. I run a set of outdoor rated speakers I got from Costco for $50. Sound fine for a trail truck. They been putting up with the weather for 2 years now.

WRONG!!! I dont know where you live or park in boulder. My Xj was broken into yesterday parked at 10th and Marine. Stole my headunit and tool box. There have been around 5 other break ins in this area one of which was also yesterday. :mad3: I love the focus on underage drinking compaired to real crime like theft:mad3:
Dychen 02-22-2002, 04:17 PM ya, watch out for that, i always thought where i live was safe from that crap, then a while back about 10 grand worth of stuff was stolen out of cars on my street. personally i wish they would steal mine stuff -does the full coverage dance-, but you know how that kind of thing goes. anyhow, i would just get a detact faceplate and keep the faceplate on you or locked up somewhere.
Cutter 02-22-2002, 04:27 PM i didn't read all these post, so if this is already said:flipoff2: just get a cover that swings down and put it over a cheap radio. I'm not sure how well the marine radios w/CD players would work in our world. I had a Pioneer marine one that skipped so much it was unusable when moving.

Yeah, face plate was off ant stuffed under my seat, they found it. I should have locked it in the box.
4x4realm 02-23-2002, 10:03 PM I bought a clarion marine cassette deck and 12 disk changer off www.ubid.com about 6 months ago for $150 you might want to watch that site to see if the get any more of those combos.
