97 TJ 4.0L I changed the exhaust manifold because it was cracked, i bought one of the ebay special. Anyway the exhaust seems to be fine now but the back of the intake has a small leak. When i start it, it runs fine but the rpms slowly increase. If i spray carb cleaner on top of the back of the intake(by the fire wall) the rpms drop. I've loosened all of the bolts and retightened using the sequence in the hayes manual but i still have a small leak. Its a new gasket by the way, do i need to use form-a-gasket? Are these just a pain to get sealed up? Or is there a different sequence that works?

The new gasket sets come with two gaskets. One is for the intake only. There should be a silver gasket and a blue one. Did you get the blue one? It makes it a lot easier to seal thins up.

Either that or get a one piece Fel-Pro brand gasket that has crush metal boarders around the edges of the exhaust ports. Those seal up pretty good most of the time.

I spray a liberal coating of Permatex CopperCote on the gasket before tightening the manifold. Also make sure and use the bolts with the bell washers. Things flex and if you don't use the bell washers, things will work loose and leak.

Make sure that the intake is sitting squarely on the two pins that are on the side of the block. When I changed out my exhaust,I didn't get the intake lined up correctly and had a similar problem.
