: 1974 Bride of Frankenstein PICS - your opinion???
Deep South Cruisers 02-21-2002, 01:54 PM I got these pics of the 74 Fj40 I was quizzing you guys about yesterday. After alot of talking to the guy here's what I believe we're looking at...
I figure from his description its it a crate motor and crate tranny with + or - 30k miles mated to a TLC t-case with the shift lever removed. All receipts were lost when the original owner died and this guy claims to have medical bills that force the sale. It was used to patrol their family estate for deer poachers and he says if he didnt have already have another 4wd he would not sell this one. Still planning to go crawl under it and photo everything.

Jason M 02-21-2002, 02:05 PM Ugly isn't it!!!
Oh yeah so is mine...
:D
Did he plan on using that jerry can holder bolted to the roof???
Do you have closeups of the fenderflares?
Still sounds a bit expensive to me...
Cruiserrg
I'm telling ya...
wngrog 02-21-2002, 02:07 PM Dude.......PASS!!!
Get Cruiserrg's rig and be done with it.
DCruiser138 02-21-2002, 02:16 PM looks like a pretty cool project..but for the $$ listen to wngrog. Cruiserrg's is bad ass! and a fukin steal!
60seriesguy 02-21-2002, 02:25 PM I would pass on that rig in two seconds...there are better FJ40's in that price bracket.
Deep South Cruisers 02-21-2002, 02:30 PM $5500 delivered is what he's asking :D
notice the junk cars in the background on the first pic:smokin:
donor cars maybe:laughing:
Donald Butcher 02-21-2002, 02:33 PM I think you could find a better rig for that price. I spent under 5k on mine and it's in considerably better shape than that. Have you checked the Truck trader magazine? I see some cruisers in there occasionally.
 :usa:
Deep South Cruisers 02-21-2002, 02:46 PM I have been watching the trader for about a year looking for the perfect one :D
I got excited on this one because I thought it was more than what the pics show. There are not that many cruisers in my area and I hunted down most of the local ones only to find rust buckets starting at $3500 (usually fresh painted to hide the cancer).
I fell in love with a 71 model down the road until I drove it and thought I might die before returning it, I'm still coughing up gas fumes and exhaust from that trip:barf:
Mark '73 FJ40 02-21-2002, 02:49 PM too much $$$$
go buy this one.

Screwzer 02-21-2002, 02:58 PM And I really like the deal I got on my FJ-55s
1st one $1500
2nd one $300 (had to pull the engine and give to the guy tho)
Looking at a 3rd one now, got him down to $800. Blown engine, but all else there.
For a Pig Farmer, No. Cal. is a great place to live.
Guangie 02-21-2002, 03:20 PM I'm with the others, be patient and pass. You buy this one and your gonna have to sink another grand into it just to see daylight. Like new tires... and probably more. Does it have 4 wheel drum brakes? If so, there goes another $500 +/- for front disc. I know when I lived in Georgia, eon's ago, for guys with farm trucks they just slapped together any parts that fit, and if this was a mule on the Ponderosa then... who knows what's wired up in there?
Look around, I think all the "guys" on the board now are looking for ya one.
ranger 02-21-2002, 03:21 PM PASS on that deal, he wants way to much for that Cruzah. Maybe $1500......:skull:

Screwzer 02-21-2002, 03:32 PM Morgan's Link
Curiouser, and curiouser.......
Land Crusher 02-21-2002, 04:35 PM for the record I gguessed corectly (ha(ha}
It looks like it does not have power
stearing or front disk breaks,
probubly still coarse spline birfields
and pinions
get the numbers off of the block
this will tell you when it was manufactured,
a new 350 4 bolt has got to be worth some thing.
but from what I can see I wold say
3800 would be a fair price ????
any one else think its worth more or less???

If he doesnt sell it by the time i got 6 grand, its mine :D :smokin:
if you get this one, jew the guy down to what Land Crusher said; thats the most I'd pay.
If you buy Reuben's, you're done with it....

Man it looks to me that the pictures and your questions on this board answer all. PASS!
That thing looks like it should be priced more like $2500-$3300
You can find some real nice cruisers for the $5000+ that that guy is asking. Sure you may have to make a road trip out of it, but that is part of becoming a cruiser owner. Hell, you could find one on pretty much anywhere for $3000 and have it shipped for another $800-$1200 and still come out ahead.
I would definitely buy the one that cruiserrg is selling. Now that is a steal. It may not be "road" ready at this point but it would cost you less to make it so than it seems that other one will cost to correct whatever "hidden" things are wrong with it. I mean come on, who bolts a jerry can holder to the side of a hard top? And all of the tranny tcase questions, sounds like a big headache to me.
One thing I learned the hard way when I bought my first cruiser is that you may have to pay a little more, but buy from somebody that actually gives a shit about cruiser folk. Costs a lot less to put more up front from a cruserhead than it does to figure out what's all fawked up from some dip$hit that only knows its not a Jeep because it says Toyota on the front.
Buy cruiserrg's ride and enjoy all the hard work and cool $hit that he has put into it.
dog walker 02-21-2002, 07:24 PM That is one UGLY cruiser!!!! Looks like a crate motor, but who cares, for $5500, I'd tell him to keep it and enjoy it. Those universal fender flares are the bomb!
Jeff
orangefj45 02-21-2002, 07:32 PM i'm gonna have to agree with the others: PASS!
with a little patience and some more searching you'll finad a cleaner rig and you'll be way happy that you waited.
just my $.02 worth.
i found a 60 for my wife for $3K and it needed less than $1K to make it roadworthy enough to go to pismo and back without any major problems. that purchase price included the engine and t-case having been rebuilt, very good paint and no rust what so ever.
patience my son!!!!!:smokin:
Deep South Cruisers 02-22-2002, 06:38 AM Thanks guys, I plan on letting the guy know today thay I'm passing on this one.
I do appreciate all the advice and need to remind myself occasionally that "there is no hurry"
I had always told myself that I would purchase from another TLCA member or cruiserhead just because of good experiences with them in the past :D
somebody hold my money, I have no self control:rasta:
KeithF 02-22-2002, 06:50 AM somebody hold my money, I have no self control:rasta: [/B][/QUOTE]I'llk gladly accept that responsibility, PM me and I'll tell ya where to send the check :smokin:
morgan 02-22-2002, 07:35 AM Wasn't Joe Turpin in NC trying to sell his registered and titled BJ70? "FJ60", see if it's still available. A BJ70 would just be the shit for wheeling.
Morgan
60seriesguy 02-22-2002, 07:58 AM Morgan, I respectfully *disagree*. A BJ70 in the US is a *bad* rig for wheeling, if you lay it on its side, good luck finding parts, even the glass is a bitch! Besides, Joe wants $7,500 for a BJ70 that needs work...
FJ60, I have a question for you! Why not look in other states? I would not hesitate to purchase an FJ40 out in CA, there's a bunch of dependable, knowledgeable Cruiserheads that can check it out for you, prices are a lot more reasonable, and the sheer number of available FJ40's means your search would probably be shorter.
I currently live outside of DC and the pool of Land Cruisers in this area is depressing. There are quite a bit of FJ40's, but *all* of them are over-priced, they tend to be rusty, and when a good one comes to market there is a mad scramble for it. Why waste your time and money? Might as well shoot for a western rig, you could get it to you for less than $800, so if you factor that into the cost of the vehicle....Just a thought.
Deep South Cruisers 02-22-2002, 08:10 AM 60seriesguy I WAS trying to stay within a few states for my purchase but The FJ40 situation here is about the same, people really don't know much about Cruisers and prices are usually inflated and the Cruisers are usually rusty.
The problem continues to be ME:D and not knowing whether or not purchasing a highly modified cruiser will satisfy my craving for a FJ40. I need to think about the TRUE use of this future vehicle and regroup and simma down:D
60seriesguy 02-22-2002, 08:16 AM I understand, man, I do! Personally, I wouldn't buy a pre-modified hard-core FJ40, not because I don't think it would be a good deal, but because I enjoy the buildup, the project, the modifications to my own specifications and desires. That doesn't mean I would mind a modified truck, but I think I would pass on a completely modified truck unless I absolutely fell in love with it.
Before you continue your search, figure out what you want out of the FJ40 when you get it, it will really cut down on the cost of the project if you don't have to do things multiple times as your needs change. Upgrades, yes, redo's, no! :)

I'm not sure if you are even considering my rig, but I am a TLCA member #9965 and belong to Land Cruiser Legends of WI. If you want to get a third party opinion on my truck talk to Woody. We wheel together quite a bit.

I'd heard it was down under $4K, but it was hearsay. I'd wheel the snot out of a $4K BJ70!
I'd forgo a $7K BJ70 that needs work.
I don't have even $1K, so I'm talking out of my ass. :)
