I've had it done for a couple of weeks now, even got to test it on some rocks.

The second pic looks like it's leaking a bit of oil. Maybe it's and illusion??

Oh wait! I think I see something that looks like a little welding job, yes? OK. You can pass.

Question--

Before you shaved your axle did you set the pinion angle so that you could make the cut parallel to the ground and obtain the best possible clearance. I'd like to shave my 60's this year but I don't have the front in yet and I want to maximize the clearance, which means setting the pinion angle first. Thanks.

Yes that's oil on the outside of the housing. I peeled the cover back testing it out. Guess I shoulda gone a lil farther up with the rock ring portion.

I already had everything set, but I didn't shave it to be parrallel with the ground, it has about a 6-7* incline to it.

I also shaved about .250 off the OD of the ring gear, but I'm wishing I would've gone just a little farther now. Next time :smokin:

What's wrong with spiders? They like to crawl too ya know:D Lockers are for people that don't know how to weld:cool:

Lockers are for people who have broken their welded carriers in half, resulting in 1 wheel drive and ruined ring and pinions.:D

nice work Easy, hey when you say you put a 6-7 deg incline to it, how did you determine that, seems like you'd determine at what point you wanted to cut it in the rear and work forward from there ? also, how did you cut it ?

are you saying you wished you shaved MORE than .250 off the ring gear ? and how did you trim the ring gear ?

I cut it on a mill with a 6 insert fly cutter. When the axle was sitting in my heep, I slapped an angle finder onto the cover mounting surface. I bolted the housing to the mill with some rather large 90* angle brackets, then using simple geometry I clocked the head of the mill to get the incline I wanted on the bottom of the housing. I cut the ring gear down on a jig grinder. I set it up on a rotary table and just fed into it from the side until I had it cut to where I thought I wanted it.

Now that's the way to shave a housing!

Hey BlueJeep, don't over do it with the pinion angle or you won't be able to get the carrier back in when it's done.:(
Here's a pic of my shaved D 80.

Actually, welding is for people who like to weld...and re-weld and re-weld. ;)

Thanks Scoutaholic,

I had thought of that but now I'll pay particular attention to it when I do the shaving. I'm glad you said something before I had to build another rear axle...:(

When you guys weld the plate on, do you weld it on the inside and the outside or just the outside? Someone else posed another question to me today, does the centersection move any when the cutting/heating/welding/heating process is going on? Should I bolt a plate to the cover bolts to keep the housing from spreading/contracting?

I welded on the outside only. For fun I indicated before and after, no appreciable movement. I was careful when heating and cooling the cast though. My 60 will come off the mill tomorrow, I just skinned the face so that there is one smooth surface...I added a bolt, cut thru the cover w/ a 7/8" endmill, welded in 7/8" barstock and drilled and countersunk a bolt. Maybe that doesn't make sense, I can post a pic tomorrow...Mike

Hey EasyXJ, whats your setup going to be? As far as tires and engine and all that shiate. Cause a D60 in an XJ means that thing is going to be huge, let me know about the details of your rig, sounds like it'll be a sweet setup

please tell me how much extra clearance
did you gain ???

and how much more could you gain next time
if you grind more off of the ring gear ??

ps looks great.

sounds like it'll be a sweet

Well, I don't know if you'd consider it sweet or not, but it's out on the trail. 37's, locked 44 ft., welded 60 rr., 5.38 reasons the wheels turn slow, 3 link front susp., subframed, stock drivetrain for now, but I don't have a fawkin' winch

Hey gozuki!!
When you are feeling a little bored you can go ahead and shoot back on up to mission oaks and cut on my new 60. I am supplying the

I gained about 1.5" of clearance, if you go further into the ring, it will go into the contact patch. RH, next time I'm at Marks, I 'll take a look...No promises since I'm really backlogged with projects right now. Here is the cover from the inside...
