I am rebuilding a Dana 44 front axle and I am having trouble with it leaking. I took it apart andd found some strange axles seals on the ends of the axle closest to the end of the axle tube. I tried to get replacements for them and my parts house says they don't exist. I have done some research and am led to believe that the seals are supposed to be inside the center section installed behind the carrier bearing races. This makes much more sense than the seals that I have found. My only problem is that the seals that the book calls for won't fit! Can anyone please tell me how these @$#%! seals are supposed to be installed?? I am going crazy here and have even called Randy's for advice but they were unable to help me either. What am I doing wrong here? The person who owned this truck before me was a complete idiot and obviously didn't know a thing about building a rearend!! I need this truck back up for this weekend. I know that its probably simple, but it is beyond me. PLEASE HELP IM ON MY KNEES BEGGING HERE!!

so what are you working on a front or a rear??? you have two different axles that you talking about here...
any way i know my dana 44 front only has two INNER seals close to the carrier... i advise is to get a book that deals with dana 44's at an auto shop...

and if you want call my good friend Brian at Payless Four Wheel drive, he put mine together for me. (530) 895-8787 m-sat 9am-6pm

To get the inner seals out you will have to remove the axle shafts and the carrier with the ring gear on it. The seals are "pressed" into the tubes from inside the housing. Chances are, if they are leaking, that the axle tubes are full of mud or grit and that is why they are leaking, ask me how I know :shaking:

Sorry guys I was in a heated moment. It is a front and not a rear. The seals that I need are the ones that are inside the carrier. Does anyone have the part number of them? Thanks!

Don't hold me to this, but I think that the part number is 5131. I just put a set of these seals in my 44 front a month ago.

Are you sure that you have all of the old seal out??? When I took mine apart and tried to get them out, the seal broke into two pieces and I thought the same thing. Was a pain to get the rest out. Just a thought. Also, are you sure that it might not be a 10 bolt front end???

YEs im posittive that it is a dana 44 the bom numbers come up as a 76 dana 44. I also changed gears to 4.56's. I didnt replace the seals then because they werent there to be replaced.n I tried the number metioned by tima nd it came up to be 102.99 that is insane for a single inner seal... Isthis maybe a rebuild kit?
