: 14 bolt sf or ff
bigwillys 02-21-2002, 11:11 PM Ok i searched for about an hour and couldn't find exactly what i was looking for. a friend of mine has 2 14 bolt rears he's selling for 150 both. I want to know if they are semi floaters or full floaters. Id like the ff cuz according to dynatrac the axle shafts don't take as much pressure as the sf axle shafts do. how can i tell whether or not they are ff? one is under an 87 or 88 chevy with a 60 front (i believe) and a 350 engine, nv4500 or something tcase. he bought the truck from pac bell. the other one is disassembled, so not sure what thats off of. any help anyone can provide would be appreciated. (sorry if this is a very stupid question)
Triaged 02-21-2002, 11:37 PM The FF has a big damn hub that sticks out thru the wheel! It has 8 bolts on it that hold the axle shaft in.
bigwillys 02-22-2002, 06:02 AM oh ok, yeah thats what these are then. thanks for your help!
bigwillys 02-22-2002, 05:52 PM ok i took another look at em, and the disassembled one has the big hubs on the inside of the rim, but the drums are a heck of alot smaller than the other one. is that just a 1 ton vs 3/4 ton thing?
Blazininthe73 02-23-2002, 07:12 AM The 1-tons do have bigger brakes than the 3/4 ton...

bigwillys 02-23-2002, 01:32 PM do they both require the 16.5 inch rim? or do the smaller ones fit inside 15s
patooyee 02-23-2002, 01:38 PM Supposedly they all fit in the 15" wheels.

Hillbilly 02-23-2002, 03:01 PM They'll fit with 15's. It's when you put discs on that you gotta start paying attention. I
bigwillys 02-23-2002, 05:51 PM oh ok. i always thought that the big ones were too big for 15s. thats good news. thanks for the info
jekbrown 02-23-2002, 06:08 PM 15" rims will work fine on a ff14b, even with discs (if you use the standard D44 or Elderado calipers). Its the front end that is the problem. D60 requires steel wheels and some grinding. How much? depends on your backspacing and particular wheel. There is a thread on coloradok5.com about this...one guy posted instructions for grinding + pics of exactly how he did it. handy info! =)

Big Blue Jimmy 03-07-2002, 04:03 PM Any truck that came with a D60 would have the FF rear end, not the SF. And that's not just for Chevy, either.
The 14B FF and 14B SF are entirely unrelated. Although it is a lot bigger than them, the SF is more similar to the 10B, 12B and D44 than it is to the 14BFF.
bigwillys 03-07-2002, 04:36 PM did 60s only come in 1 tons (for any make, ford chevy, dodge, etc)
Triaged 03-07-2002, 06:22 PM Yes. D60 fronts only came in 1 tons (but I hear some HD 3/4 ton fords came with them but no chevy's)
BadDog 03-08-2002, 05:58 PM Yes, Ford 1 ton is F350. However, I'm told the D60 came in some rare F250s with options like "snow plow". I can also vouch for 15x8 wheels on 1 ton (large) C14 FF drums since that is what is on mine now.
and some (every cummins truck) dodge 3/4 tons got d60 fronts
bigwillys 03-08-2002, 07:43 PM what years were those?
BadDog 03-09-2002, 08:51 AM This is a list posted on CK5 by "NoRulz", I believe he is "Fullsizes Rule" on PBB.
The vehicles to look for are:
77.5-79 F250, it came with a high GVWR or snowplow package
79 F350 all
86-91 F350 will get you a king pin front, but wider spring pad distances than the 77.5-79 version
92-97 F350 Ball joint front, in my opinion not a bad thing, just harder to do a hi-steer if your interested in that.
99-Present F350, F450, & F550 Dual tire only, balljoint, not sure about the width, but they use Fords new goofy 8 on 170mm bolt patteren. Single wheel trucks use a D50, which is kinda good & bad. I'm pretty sure it's reverse cut, but only uses D44 sized ring & pinion... you do get the huge axle joints, but with only 30 spline shafts.
80-85 Ford was on a "all IFS" kick, you GM guys should know all about that one, so even the F350s were TTB
