: toy tcase question... kerry? scwafish?
poppycock 02-21-2002, 11:46 PM do you run a transmission crossbrace? are you running any other braces besides the one in the rear case? seems like the tranny/tcase would torque right out like this? also do you run a sidekick flywheel? :emb:

ppillard 02-22-2002, 03:02 PM Hey, I'm puttin' that same tranny/t-case setup on my 1.6TD. More pics please. I got mine stripped to the frame too, and I've been wondering how long it would stick out there. I'm suprised you didn't lower your engine/tranny a bit. It looks awful long. Would you mind posting a pic of the whole frame profile?
poppycock 02-24-2002, 05:49 PM it's scwafish's rig :D
scwafish 02-24-2002, 09:21 PM Poppy:
Sorry for the delay, I was in Johnson Valley goofing off with the boys...anyways this is how a toy tc mates in a toy, and my rig uses a stock toy tranny/tc mount.
I will be putting a xmember back in around where the old tranny xmember went, but the drivetrain will not be attached to it, it will just add rigidity back to the frame.
ppillard: Its only a few inches longer than stock. I didnt lower it because I wanted maximum clearance under the belly.
scwafish 02-24-2002, 09:23 PM Oh yeah, yep on the kick flywheel.
poppycock 02-24-2002, 10:07 PM so your only bolting the rear case to the the cross member and then just running a brace under the tranny - but not attached to it? thanks for the info :)
scwafish 02-25-2002, 07:18 AM Correct! I also upgraded the motor mounts to the HD units sold by TT. Just get off your duff and come over and check it out!
LostIt 02-25-2002, 12:01 PM If you are afraid that the drivetrain will twist, then you could try a crossmember plate that attaches to the back of the last t-case. This would stop the drivetrain from trying to rotate and tearing up motor mounts.
DRM sells one that would be easy to make work with your setup.

TNToy 02-25-2002, 12:47 PM DRM got the design from Front Range's crossmember.
On a stock Toy, there is one rubber mount underneath the tranny/xfer combo and the two motor mounts. That's it. A lot of guys with dual Toy cases end up chaining down the drivers side motor mount or changing to a more rigid crossmember mount to combat the twist generated by all of that torque eventually, but a lot of guys run with that setup and have no problems.
So you may want to think about beefing it, but it's plenty adequate for now. You may think about just going down to the junkyard and finding a spare rubber mount that's not in too bad shape... and putting one on BOTH of the dual cases. Should be plenty beefy. Scwasfish is set because of his more rigid motor mounts - he should be fine.
TNToy 02-25-2002, 12:47 PM Forgot to mention - the twisting of the drivetrain kills the motor mount, not the t-case one... it's usually fine.
poppycock 02-25-2002, 01:06 PM sweet! this will be much easier than i anticipated. i already got the hd tt motor mounts so i'm headed in the right direction. scwafish i swear i'm coming over one of these days :D but i'm moving into my very own garage now
rotozuk 02-25-2002, 04:33 PM Hmm.. An interesting product.. I was thinking of making something like this up for my own. Both of the vendors cited sure do want a lot of money for that plat though. One is over $200, and the simple plate here is $80. I'll probably just draw up what I want and laser cut my own. Since I'm running devorced, I need a bit more mounting then normal for my Toyota cases. Anyone else interested if I cut some of these up? It will be just the plate, so you can weld up whatever works for your application. I'll take a look at the cases and work up a design.

scwafish 02-25-2002, 09:21 PM Poppy if you come over it WILL save you lots of time in the long run...wheres the new poppyshop?

I thought about that but the front shaft clearance gets tricky, and requires a complex xmember.
poppycock 02-25-2002, 10:11 PM i'll be checking yours out up close for sure before i start. the poppyshop is out in healdsberg. :D
TNToy 02-26-2002, 10:26 AM If you want a simple, hella-beefy Toy crossmember to copy, take a look at BudBuilt's stuff. He's on the board as Bud R.

scwafish 02-26-2002, 09:15 PM Yota-Thats beefy for sure, but it hangs down too much for my taste. My setup is completely above or flush with the bottom of the frame.
Poppy-Kerry will be at my crib this Fri. checking out the zuk and having some brews. He's in CA on a gig. We'll be here if your into it.

That's why he'll build you one for a 2" drivetrain lift too. It's basically flat ;)
Just throwing out some ideas, since his seems to be plenty strong, and way simpler than most of the ones that I've seen people make.
rotozuk 02-27-2002, 10:49 AM Since we seem to have a good thread going here..
I'd like to confirm something before I kill a couple of t-cases. I'm told by a couple of Toyota owning club members that I should be fine if I clock my Toyota t-cases to gain ground clearance. Other then shifters being off to the side, they don't think I'll have any oiling issues. Since I'm going to run rods to the shifters anyhow, I'm not worried about that issue, just want to make sure I'm not about to open up a can of trouble here.
I'd think with the ammount of oil sloshing around in the double cases, that this just shouldn't be an issue.
Do keep in mind that my application is devorced, so this is an option.
Also on my skidplate/mount, I plan to make it something like the Bill Forrest T-case Bucket. Nice smooth edges that hug the case, and bolts to the case using several of the case bolts.

TNToy 02-27-2002, 10:59 AM You biggest problem isn't going to be ensuring that everything is lubricated. It's going to be keeping the lubricant where it belongs. A stock Toy case isn't sealed all that well. Just a couple of boots... so leakage may become a problem on off-camber stuff.
I've heard of someone running a Toy case on it's side when using Front ranges (http://www.frontrangeoffroadfab.com) twin stick, though. It has a vent fitting just like an axle, and seals up perfectly water tight.
I run a snorkel on my Toy and everything is vented to the roofline, but the t-case leaks some. I usually find a little water in it if a water crossing dunks the t-case for more than a few seconds. So I plan on getting the front range unit after I do my axle swap next week, and fixing that problem.
I don't think it would be a big deal if you siliconed the inner shifter boot down nice and tight (that's where they leak) as long as you don't flip it upside down or anything.
Anyone interested in a write-up on installing on-board bilge pumps under the seats? I've thought about it from time to time... lots of water on our trails after it rains.
UZI 9mm 02-27-2002, 11:42 AM bahaha i'm up for a bilge pump article to be used for daily driving, let alone trail water:(
to say it rains a lot here is an understatement.
anyone else know that unique "water inside your windshield frame slosh sound as you turn a corner"? (followed by the water then spraying down and soaking your legs, and moisture sensitive electronics):D
poppycock 02-27-2002, 01:02 PM woohoo! now if i can scrape up some cash i can send kerry off to get started on my adaptor. :D scwa, is he bringing his kick?
scwafish 02-27-2002, 07:14 PM Nope..he flew out.
just in case anyone is interested, I have the crossmember/skid combo from FROR just laying in the corner in my shop....see the first 2 links at this url http://dreamwater.com/zuk/toyota.html 90 bucks takes them. That includes the shipping anywheres on the USA mainland.
They are used obviously.....and have seen some ARCA hits. I now run the BUD stuff.
ZUK, put me first in line. i'm all over that. i just PM'd you.....i can be reached by email at brbuter@yahoo.com thanks
i couldnt PM ya, so i shot you an email. thanks ken---greg
