: Power steering pump and box questions.
BigWhiteStroke 04-12-2005, 04:18 PM Due to some changes and fitment problems I am changing to a 79 f150 steering box and a pump off a 77 ford van. (This is on an 87 ford ranger) Does anyone know if this is the canned hammed saginaw pump? It sure looks like a canned ham. My questions are: I am going to need to get new powersteering lines. What are the sizes and threads coming out of the box, and what is the size of the female threads on the rear of the pump. Are these threads NPT, JIC, or somthing that I do not know of. Thanks for your help. Also, do you think by running this combo that i will have more steering power with 40 inch tsl's versus the stock pump and box I was running?
My '76 van has a Sag pump, so yeah, probably.
Why you'd willingly choose to run a Sag box with 40's, however, is beyond me. Pack a spare sector shaft.
FuzzyNuts 04-13-2005, 05:11 PM yah why change the box, that ranger box was used from 1980- 1997 in rangers, exprorers F150- F450`s and maby 550`s . Its fare easyer to service than the sag box. Its also easyer to tap into for ram assist. Ita takes me about 15 - 20 secconds to strip your ranger box to and empty shell and 30-40 secs to reassemble it (no exagerating) the sag box takes 15 mins to strip and about 30-40 mins to replace each ball bearing and reassemble, how gay. Besides the box whats wrong with the pump, I know everyones on the sag wagon, but why, I have replaced just as many sag pumps , I have a number of trucks ripping around with ram assist and the new style ford pump running them, I accidentaly over adjusted the steering stop on my dads F350 the other day and was blown away when the ram was fighting the steering stop and snapped the tierod end off, that was a big bang, and no it was not a faulty end or an incorrect taper, it snapped flush with the mount, thats alot of pressure, only one mod to these pumps, drill out the orfice in the fitting the pressure line threads in, from about 1/8" to about 5/16"
BigWhiteStroke 04-14-2005, 08:52 AM The reason is for clearence. The steering box and pitman arm always rubbed my remote oil filter hoses. With the box on the outside of the frame, I can put the filter back on the block and not have to worry about the filter all together. I am running a 351w, not a 302 or the factory v-6. Changing the box to the 79 ford one made me have to move the pump up. I have a problem with losing the power steering caps off the new ford pump. I hae lost two on this ranger and one on my powerstroke. I am tired of them. I also want to run headers and get rid of the factory manifolds i am currently running. My motor is mildly built and the manifold are like a human taking a big breath and then exhaling through a straw. Any one know what size the threads are coming out of the high pressure port on the pump? thanks
FuzzyNuts 04-14-2005, 01:01 PM get a different remote adapter like advanced adapters, if different fittings wont fix the rubbing hose. I put a 351 in my friends ranger and it fits a short filter on it. I used the performance plus (or something)remote kit on all the other trucks ive done including mine, but use a combination of 90 and 45 degree fittings to rout the hoses sweetly. That advanced kit, the fittings arent on the end pointing at the steering box, they come out the side. There has to be an easyer fix than screwing with the frame. Howbout the caps, I had the same problem when I tossed in the ram assist, because im using a single ended ram, my res goes up and down as I steer, I drilled out the breather hole a tiny bit to allow the air to escape faster instead of poping the cap, never had it hapen since, I also have done that on all the other ram kits and no problems with them either
. Besides the box whats wrong with the pump, I know everyones on the sag wagon, but why, I have replaced just as many sag pumps , I have a number of trucks ripping around with ram assist and the new style ford pump running them,
I'd say your experience is unique. IME the later style pump is junk, screams, and struggles to turn 33's on the trail. Go walk around a parking lot, you'll know Ford pickups by sound as they try to turn into parking spaces. I'm not complaining about the noise, but w these pumps the noise is an indication the pump isn't up to the job. I put a Sag in my '90 Bronco and was very impressed w the reduced steering effort.
So I'd say everyone's on the sag wagon because it really is a better unit, or maybe 'cause they're tired (cycling joke)
FuzzyNuts 04-16-2005, 08:18 AM well you could have just boosted the pressure , way quicker than converting, takes about 1 hr. I cant understand the bashing the ford pumps get. The reson chevyt turn so easily is because the sag pump is set for higher pressure (it takes a hour to mod the ford valve and you dont even need to pull the pump off). If you raise the ford pum pressure it will turn just as easy and the whining will stop, the whining is caused by the so much fluid going through the reliefe valve`s small orfice instead of going through the box and back to the res . I hate chev steering, absolutley no road feel, Id wrather use some muscle, I also hate the squeeling belts when you hit the steering stops, this is also caused by the higher pressure setting.. Just letting you know why the pumps make noise, its not the pump wearing or being weak, its the pressure relief, allowing excesive fluid bypass , which also causes the harder than new turning effort, instead of converting to sag pumps or even replacing with another of the same , try changing the valve, and for the guys that need lots of pressure modify the valve just like a saganaw valve, the only difference is the end cap on a sag is threaded in and the fords pressed. They do come apart, I took one apart and put it back together but I never used it because I have the ram, that reminds me I dont know where I put that thing now/
madmark 04-19-2005, 08:16 AM I would like a little more info on the mods you can do to the newer ford pumps to up the pressure,I have 2 of them they both make noise.Plus I will be going to bigger tires in the near future.
Thanx in advance for the info.
FuzzyNuts 04-21-2005, 12:11 PM check out westtexasoffroad.com and look in tech, what they call the end cap. In the sag pumps its threaded in, the ford is pressed, and the principals are the same. I personaly prefer just boosting the flow, and adding a ram, that ram is like 10 stabilizers but without the extra steering effort, also the rams takes the load off the box and frame, and spring bushings
lostoffroad 08-02-2005, 08:56 PM i dont understand whats up with the drilling out of the ford pump valve? i have a 78 f250 and i have the "noisy" ford pump. i have 37s and it works ok but i would love for it to work better. i am planning on putting hydro assist on. if i drill it out will it be enough for the ram? with a descent reaction time for the street?
