: AGR vs. Saginaw

I am in the middle of a mini-truck disc conversion (thanks Nolen for the advice on my axle) and my next project is Power steering. I have heard and would like to confirm that they put AGR pumps on J20's. I know where I can pick up a bunch of steering pumps off of j20's for free. Anyone know if they did put those pumps on the trucks, because he only has j20 parts. Also, any opinions of the AGR vs. a Saginaw conversion would be appreciated. I have learned much just by hanging around here and reading. Thanks to all for making this such a good board. Also, Woody's sight is very informative also, and it probably saves you guys the headache of answering the same questions over and over.

I'm not sure, but isnt the AGR box just a tweaked out saginaw-type box? someone help me out here. I think it is, not sure. Don't know about the pump tho. sorry

Okay, The J20's have larger pistons in the steering box
3.5" vs 3" in a normal box.. The pumps do provide a slightly larger volume as well. However if you do the mods that Lakerat has on his site (http://www.westtexasoffroad.com) then you can just use a normal pump.

How many of these j20's does he have?? I really want the larger piston size.

AGR's pumps are the same as the J20's and a couple of other GM rigs and their box is just the j20's with a fancy new cap...

AGR is a company that rebuilds saginaw pumps and boxes to their specs, and now that thats clear the answer is no.
Jeep used saginaw pumps and boxes.
My rear D60 came from a 84 j20, better grab a few of those :D

I never knew that, but I wonder why some people just have nothing but trouble with AGR stuff and old used stock saginaw stuff just keeps on working.

Also
Is the larger end cap on saginaw boxes an indication of the larger piston?
Just wondering because a friend has an AGR box and we machined new end caps with a threaded boss for the assist and his is the same size as my box which came from a 70's chevy caprice.

I tired the AGR route. I went through 3 boxes before I went with a J20 stock box. When they worked they worked great and thats why I kept trying it. My rebuilt box has lifetime and AGR is like 90 days or somthing. When I went through 3 boxes within 1 week worth of driving I said no way.

Think of this. By the time you get a used box out of a junkyard it has been working for a very long time. I feel that the old used units have been tested and the bad oned weeded out.

Yes the larger end cap is the tell tale sign. Although AGR does not just use the larger box. They sell both. Measure your end cap to see. If it is around 3" then it is the small piston. It is is closer to 3.5" then it is the larger piston..

Thank's, so the piston in question is 3.5" in OD instead of 3.0"?
How big is the housing, 4.0" at the end?

Thank you all for the information, I feel like I understand a little better what I am getting. I am going to pick up a few pumps and boxes next weekend. As hard as it is putting something from a jeep onto my cruiser it does help ease the pain knowing that saginaw stuff was also widely used by GM, plus I can't beat the price. Thanks all.

Sorry Jason but your a little off. They do get some of there stuff directly from Delphi (Old Saginaw) but they are using some new and some used parts in there boxes and if i'm not mistaken they also have a third party assemble everything. I've talked to the old owner of Arlington Gear and Rack (AGR) and got it straight from the horses mouth.
I can tell you one thing if he still owed AGR, their customers would be much happier.

Good info Lakerat. The larger piston will measure 3 3/8" across the convex cover. The smaller piston will measure 3 1/8" across the cover.

You can get the larger piston boxes from Dodge 2500 and Chevy 2500 (95 diesel). The only issue is the 3 bolt pattern on the boxes. Not a problem if you're just fabbing up a new install.

BTW, I have a larger piston box from a 95 GMC 2500 diesel.

sorry , didn't realize it was an old one. somebody linked to my site from it so i thought i'd check it out.
Not sure on tire prices yet but the 36's should be under 200. probably around 185-195.
That first set is going to end up costing me around 3000 if i can't find who stole them.

Sup Matt? My steering is still working awesome! Sent a bunch of curious people your direction this weeknd at ERoCC. You really need to send me a stack of your business cards, tough to find a pen out there when you need one!

Thanks again,
Mike

Ditto on that Matt.

Bummer on the tires.
But with the others that are surfacing I am betting it will be hard to find the set that was stolen :(

I really wanted to see them in action..

Anything will work if you spend enought time and money to install it. ;-)

Not sure but about the 83 K2500 pickup truck box. It needs to mount on the inside of the frame rail if you want to do a "typical"
saginaw ps conversion.

I know some of the truck boxes mounted on the outside of the frame rail.
