Having to drive around in front wheel drive, until I get my rear shaft fixed, I am noticing a lot of play in my hubs.
I have about a quarter of a turn in freeplay in my front driveshaft. No it is not the backlash of the ring and pinion, the axle shafts are moving.
Is this normal, are do these hubs suck?

I dunno about the hubs, but do you have a locker up front? A Detroit or Lockright will have a bunch of freeplay like that....

nope, open. The axle shafts are moving, so I know the problem lies in the hubs.

So, just for clarification, you are jacking up the vehicle, jamming the shaft so that it doesn't spin, then moving the "wheel/tire/hub assembly", and the shaft is NOT moving, but the "wheel/tire/hub assembly" is moving slightly?

No.
This is what I am doing.
Vehicle on the ground, tranny in netrual, and hubs locked in.
Diff is open
I then turn the driveshaft and watch the joints in the knuckles.
As I turn the driveshaft, I can see both joints moving in the same direction, they both move about 7 degrees before stopping.
