: FJ40 Differential Protection
Guppie 04-12-2005, 10:04 PM I now have a spring over and am looking to put some protection on my front and rear differentials. I am open to all options, skid plates, etc. Is there anyone out there that makes a diff skid plate for an FJ40? I already searched but couldn't find anything. I would appreciate and reccomendations on what others are using, pics etc, also any reccomendations on what others have fabbed up.
thanks,
Noah
orangefj45 04-12-2005, 10:15 PM butch aka butchbuilt used to make some really nice units until we lost him. :(
he would take 9" steel end caps for some sort of pipe and cut it in half, then cut a slot for the fill plug and a couple of drain holes on the bottom and weld it to the housing. i have one but will NOT part with it. here's a pic so you can make your own. that is if you can find the end cap.
smurfblue40 04-12-2005, 10:17 PM I've seen them made out of a 9in. steel pipe cap (cut in half)
I've also seen a cage style (don't know who made it)
I think I'll go the pipe cap route...
good luck

65SWB45 04-12-2005, 10:26 PM There was a guy at Rubithon last year making some really heavy duty ones. Raffled off on or two. In fact, he was one of the guys who helped a lot with the raffle. I think Tony [trt2] or Ross Woody [wooody] knows how to get ahold of him.

woooody 04-12-2005, 11:18 PM Michael Dremen made the caps for Butch Lewis... I don't have Michaels number, but Tony probably does.
Mustard Dog 04-13-2005, 07:10 AM I went with the pipe cap, took some hard hits and never got tweeked. :)
cruiserbrett 04-13-2005, 08:38 AM there is a gray furry spoiled feline that would make for some protection... Just ducttape her up there and forget about diff damage.
On a more serious note those diff covers are just pipe caps. Any commercial plumbing supply should have them, just cut them in half, notch for drains and diff filler plug and weld on.

Rockzar 04-13-2005, 10:00 AM I also want one, and would make one, but the part about "just cut them in half" is my technical issue with doing this. They are thick as hell. I would buy the materials if someone local to me (San Mateo/ San Francisco area) can cut and notch this bad boy. You take one, I'll take the other....

how thick are those things? I have the plas if you want. I could use a hand on the cruiser in trade for chopping that fawker in half. I gotta get the body off the cruiser in the next few weeks, so you scratch my back and I will scratch yours... hahahahahha You can even keep both ends (I don't need either one).

LC Hamma 04-13-2005, 05:40 PM Here's what I did to my front housing:
Guppie 04-13-2005, 10:49 PM Brett,
ask far as the cat goes, I may as well put my balls on the front of the diff...
are we working on things Saturday? You don't answer your damn emails. I am thinking fish tacos and beers after? I may be sleeping on your couch.
I may ask to borrow your plasma, will that thing cut through that thick of metal?

Flatty 04-14-2005, 12:13 PM Man I wish we can do it at my place, but my neighbor will call the landlord and throw a coniption about the noise adn the people... Fuck him. I can bring the plas wherever you want, or if you want, get my my house at 5:00 or so on Wed, and we can do it there with a few people there. That works just fine. Let me know. I have the welder adn the plas.
