Ok so I heard that the International engine blocks have a high nickel content. Is that a good thing? What does that mean?

well some of the motors at the pick N pull here have a high gravel and bolt content.

This is due to me shoving crap into the spark plug holes to keep the motor from turning so I can remove the pulleys and flywheels.

:D

Sorry to get off topic here :flipoff2: but high nickel content is good. I can't explain the metallurgy behind it but it means the cylinder bores don't wear fast at all. The Cad 472 500 cid engines are supposed to have high nickel content just like some of the IH engines. When I pulled my 472 out of the 69 Coupe Deville it was in it had no ridge at the top of the bore and was less than one thousandth of an inch over stock bore size. The car had 205,000 miles on it and the cam bearings were trashed but the bores were perfect. That is what the IH guys say about there engines when they pull them as well. Hope this helps ya!

High nickel content is good. Any engine block made in Mexico is bad because of the low nickel content. If you can pull the pan off of a Chevy motor before buying it, it will have "Hencho en Mexico" stamped on the main caps. Stay away from them.

High nickel means it is very wear resistant. Also tougher to cut and drill since it is very abrasive...It is not any lighter though...

On Chevy engines you can find the nickel content casted on the block under the timing chain cover. Different years of production have different blends. I'll have to dig out my Chevy engine bible to find out which blocks are best.....:skull:

Yea my machinest like to give me a hard time because I cost him a ton of money. He can bore and hone and chebby block with a cheese grater and he can't do that on my Chrysler and IH blocks!

Geoff Walsh in Australia sells heads for diesel Landcruisers that are cast in China with high nickel cast iron and then machined in Australia. Allegedly crack resistant. If you buy one of his kits be sure to pay extra for an OEM head gasket.

Quoted from my Chevy sb interchange manual

"Metal alloy identification is usually located on the front face of the block under the timing chain cover. This identification indicates the presences of tin and nickel. (Tin helps the cast iron heat and cool more evenly, nickel hardens and polishes the bore surfaces so the ring seals better and less wear occurs.)

FYI: The Small Block Chevy blocks that have the highest Nickel content of all production SBC blocks are the ones with a "010" casting number on them. They were in production from 1968-1978 if I'm not mistaken.
