With that large of an axle, most generally consider 38's the MINIMUM. if you can find a set of used 44's it would be much easier on the pumpkin bearings and spindle injectors.
Is it something like :cow: ?
quickly, quickly move this for the safety of you and your family

I had an older d44 open w/ 3.73 in the front w' a v8. 38.5" gumbo monster mudders tires. After a few goo :shaking: d hops on a hill i stapped the outer stub.

I twisted a d44 shaft in my CJ on the street with 37's and a mild v8. I consider 35's to be the max in a jeep unless it has a 4cyl.

all the haters should offer advice - but this should also have gone into Newbie 4x4...
Slicksand or whatever - I have a buggy with 38.5 TSL's on D44's front and rear - Waggy offset 44's, we have not broken a shaft (previous owner wheeled the shit out of it - guide at some events and is comp ready) as I will also this weekend on its maiden voyage with me :D at Bid Dog's (www.bigdogsoffroad.com)
Anywhoo - depending on the terrain and how you are on the skinny pedal you can wheel up to about a 38" tire on a D44 - plenty of people on here (not just jeeps) run 44's with larger tires - but with chromoly shafts and beefy U-loints (CTM's etc)
You CAN make a 44 as strong as a 60 with some serious upgrades in the housing (WHY do this to a 44? Strong as a 60, ground clearance of a 44, plus the weight of a 44) - do a search for "35 spline dana 44" online and there should be a few articles but the money involved is something you need to ask yourself...
The jeeps are pretty light so larger tires on a 44 should be sufficient - just get beefy spares and U-joints and wheel it...

If you snap a shaft you can upgrade with some nice hardened alloy shafts-but by that time-you should have just went with a 14 bolt or dana 60 rear you can find for $50-200. Do it right the first time. A front dana 44 will hold up to moderate wheelin' with a max 37/38" tire size-but try to get something larger for the back.

I hear Michelin XMLs are nice. They come in a 52", should be pretty light, so it will work.
:flipoff2:
Seriously though, newbie section, and I wouldn't run more than a 36" on a 44 and be easy on the go pedal.
Me, i run 35's on a dana 30, but it is fun to break it. :grinpimp:
