hi there,

i have a pretty "standard" sami (31", 4.16, rears upfront, spoa, LRight)

... and i am out in the market for *rear* leaves... what are you guys running for gooooood flexx???

as i run rears in the front also, i will go with m/l or DLS... but only in front ... any opinions on that?

thx

A friend of mine is running CJ front springs in the rear and he does very well in Moab. He also has the rear (sami springs) up front. I think the years you want to use are 74-86.

I second the YJ vote.

I love my YJ springs. I got the conversion kit from Trail Tough and was very statisfied with the quality and easy install. I recommend them 100%. Brent, the owner, is a great, knowledgable guy.

Here's a couple pozer shots (still have flex to go):

realy doesnt matter I have YJ front packs on the rear and Rear's on the front It just happened I did the rear first and when I went to do the front I took what I could get they work the same allthough some people prefer the 5pack over the 4 help keep down the axle wrap

Rockrat is right, it doesn't matter. Front and rear YJ's are the same length, but they have a different number of leaves. I have 5-leaf packs all the way around and love 'em. ~Steve

I have 2.5" YJ fronts all around and I love em but if you only want to do the YJ's in the rear I's wortj it. I have the YJ's with revolvers and I couldnt ask for more, except for maybe a trction bar to keep down the axle wrap.

YJ's with Brent's kit. I'd recommend 5 or more leafs if you use stock springs.

I had a pair of CJ springs from JC Whitney and found them to be VERY stiff. I would recommend YJ's for the rear. I now have six-leaf front YJ's and five leaf rears. They YJ's flex like mad. I can get over a 36-inch obstacle without lifting a tire now :D . The front flex is about the same as with the rears up front and missing links, but the rear flexs much better than it did with the CJ springs.

cant speak for everyone but fabed my own S/R and rear brackets

with the YJ's

I measured the front of my Samurai before and after the YJ swap. It was about an inch taller than it was before the swap, when it had a Calmini shackle reverse and stock springs. I forgot to measure the rear, though. I would say it sits an inch or two higher, though.
As for mounts, I bought, and would HIGHLY recommend, the Trail Tough YJ spring conversion kit. Top quality and easy to install. Customer service is also outstanding! www.trailtough.com Good luck. ~Steve

YJ springs at all 4 corners! That's the only way to go....

I have stock 6-cyl. YJ 5-pack springs up front, and some custom combination 6-pack YJ springs in back, which seems to balance out my ass-heavy Samurai (hardtop with lots of gear mounted in back) and makes spring wrap a non-issue. Here's a picture of my Samurai's flex.

First off..... that ramp looks way spooky!

The CJ springs are a very popular rear addon since they are the same width as the Samurai and can be installed inexpensively and easily.

The years you would want to scavenge from are 1976+ CJ (any model).

If you have any questions on the CJ spring swap in the rear, feel free to email us. We've done hundreds of them in this fashion.

Glenn, What about CJ's in the front?? I am running the CJ's in the rear and the sami rears up front. I was wondering if CJ's up front would be any better than the sami's rears:confused:

Here's a shot from yesterday's run showing what YJ's and a simple missing link will do.

i just did my cj springs in the rear last week. they lengthened my wheelbase by almost 3 inches it was a great mod. i did have to throw on a longer shaft and rethink my shock mounting locations but i love them. ohh and dont forget the missing link style shackles they make the whole shabang work. dont leave home without them. hey the price was right too, the springs were free from a generous local club member, they were rusting into his driveway so he decided to give them to me!!! yipee, now i have to find an hour or so to bolt the rears up front and i am off to the races!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: http--www.rockymountainextreme.com-attachment.phps=3c3ba322798c7d88a6f8c5e8a63b2d16&postid=2511

I've been running the CJ springs on all four corners for a couple of years now. Flex's very well, ~830something+ on a 30* ramp. Not too difficult to make them work on the front, actually much easier than the YJ's to get on. Relocate the rear hanger and use missing link type shackles...

Some specific spring info that my be of some use or interest...

76-86 front CJ springs ~44" eye to eye, centered pin, 2" wide

YJ/rearCJ springs ~ 45" e-e, centered, 2.5"w

SJ-old cherokee/wagoneer fronts ~ 47"e-e, ~22.5"&24.5" pin offset, 2.5"w

XJ cherokee ~51" e-e, ~22.5"&28.5" pin offset, 2.5"w

Yota FJ60 LC ~ 57"e-e, ~25"&32" pin offset, 2.5"w
