: 4-17-05 Weekend Update
robselina 04-17-2005, 05:32 PM How did you guys fare over the weekend?
I was very unproductive. :shaking: Anyway, here's my list:
- played with the steering pump and reservoir but the crank pulley I got appears to be the wrong type since mine bolts on with a single large bolt in the center while the replacements all use multiple (I think 8) smaller bolts. I'm scratching my head about adapting them to work....
- Got the ram mounts mostly finished and plumbed it up...It's done except for a pair of clamps that'll hold the tie-rod mount in place. Not sure if you can see in the photo, but there are two little sections of pipe welded in place and then the center section with the mount has 1/2" removed along it's length underneath so it can be clamped in place but unclamped for doing quick alignments still....
http://www.nmt.edu/~rselina/scout/scout042.JPG
- Also welded in the upper rear shock mounts and mounted the rear shocks. I decided to be stupid and use the stickers :flipoff2: Shitty shock pride yo! :grinpimp:
http://www.nmt.edu/~rselina/scout/scout041.JPG
That's about it aside from some really minor stuff. I spent most of today dicking around with my welding cart since I went from an S size tank to a T (?) and the fawker was way to big to fit so I hacked it up (the cart that is) and made it work...still not very stable though.
Oh yea, this was last week but the steering valve is in place too. I couldn't get a short shaft with the right spline so I just grounded the fawker off and burnt it on. Should hold.

How about you guys? hope you were more productive than me!
Bindernut 04-17-2005, 06:10 PM Where is your drag link?
Edit: Never mind, I missed that you aren't using a regular old Saginaw box.... smack. You don't need one I guess.
Binder 04-17-2005, 06:51 PM My junk is done. :D This week it gets a stinger for the front then wheel next Sat. I did leave a few small things to work on here and there. Mount the jack, make glove box, shit like that. I drove the rig today and it seems to run good for the 2 blocks anyway. I like the feel of the new full mannual Art Carr trans.
I'll try and weigh it and get some pics this week. :grinpimp:
Ben W 04-17-2005, 07:08 PM HoS came and hauled his new rig home, and I started prepping the front axle for my new rig.
Urban Wheeler 04-17-2005, 07:41 PM Did a little bench racin', did a little research for my upcoming project, drank some beer, helped a buddy put the motor back in his Heep, so on and so forth. Didn't really do much Scout related. Going to update my post in the garage sale thread.
robselina 04-17-2005, 08:05 PM Where is your drag link?
Edit: Never mind, I missed that you aren't using a regular old Saginaw box.... smack. You don't need one I guess.
full hydraulic steering, the ram does all the work.
robselina 04-17-2005, 08:08 PM Going to update my post in the garage sale thread.
Speaking of which, that tranny I got from you is rebuilt and ready to swap in. Once I get the steering finished up that'll be the next project (along with a new clutch)....I'm betting going from a crawl ratio of 47 to one of 118 is going to kick ass ( t-case gears and tranny swap combined) :D
Jeepdude_Jay 04-17-2005, 08:49 PM I like the feel of the new full mannual Art Carr trans.
I'll try and weigh it and get some pics this week. :grinpimp:
Still a 727?
Cajun 04-17-2005, 08:57 PM Mounted my batteries out back, messed with wiring, finished plumbing the propane, welded out my bumpers and seat mounts, looked at how/where to mount my remote trans filter and cooler, painted dash panels and mounted my gauges and switch panel. I need to update my buildup thread but my digi cam crapped out.
JustinL 04-17-2005, 09:07 PM got a d44 full spool and 4.88 gears for 100 bucks. used for about 500 miles and they started to whine, owner got tired of it and sold them to me :D
Harvester of Sorrow 04-17-2005, 09:21 PM HoS came and hauled his new rig home, and I started prepping the front axle for my new rig.
What he said...
Hey Ben...the railroad tie tire pic mechanism is now a nice lawn ornament...ha ha ha
The new rig fits like a damn glove under the covered parking of my apartment. couldn't ask for better coverage.
Looking forward to seeing what Ben builds next.
That was a long day of driving and a lot of DIESEL... Mucho thanks to one of my best friends, and member of this board JESSE ANGEL for wasting a Saturday helping me out. :cool2:
Chief yelling alot 04-17-2005, 10:27 PM well installed a new master cylinder also found out my vacume booster is fawked up so I went and got a hydro-boost and master cylinder from a 95 astro van and installed it. tsm1mt 04-17-2005, 10:34 PM Put the transmission back together, finished wiring up the Taurus fan, finished replacing all of the brakes and put 4 tires back on it, checked tire clearance..
Lightened the hood.

Checking the tire clearance at almost full stuff.

Don't need to trim anything from the rear, but might take a little out of the front.
Took it for a spin, still haven't hit on the right valve body yet..

Hood has the hood pin holes drilled already. I need to pull the fenders back off again and paint the "skeleton" before I re-mount the hood.
Front looks pretty good.. makes the back look REALLY bad.. so I started pulling dents and decided the quarters are beyond repair, so I pulled the steel repops out of my storage shed and started tearing into 'em, pulling the tailgate off and bed rail caps.
I needed to pull the end-caps off anyhow, since the corner post has broken away from the inner quarter thanks to the roll.
"The list" is looking pretty short.. one more thing to change on the valvebody, fix the corner and end-caps, weld the new quarters on.. sand everything and break out the ZeroRust and squirt it.
YellowIH 04-18-2005, 06:58 AM Finished the rewiring of the underdash/underhood stock spagehtii....what the hell was the factory thinking when they wired the Scout??? :barf:
Thanks to Tom M. for help with the wiring.
Loomed up and zip tied every offending wire and mounted everything...its going to be a mess when I need to crack into the wiring for some gremlin killing.....
Installed Mike Ismail's RPT tranny mount. Nice piece. The original stock mount was in two pieces...no wonder I needed a new mount. The driveline is like a rock now...very solid. Only had to drill out the crossmemer for the new bolts....other wise a R&R procedure.
Finished an in-cab winch remote....finshed the new dash. Very pleased.
Did some other piddly crap with it. Looking to pull the poly gas tank and fix the leak around the sending unit so I can fill it up without leaks.
Mowed the yard and acted domestic the rest of the time.
Getting ready to try and finish an OBW project I started two years ago.... :grinpimp:
ihojeff 04-18-2005, 08:11 AM Was at the Tulare Dustbowl this weekend (IH Western Regionals). Had fun, seen some old faces, and made some money.

Sully 04-18-2005, 09:13 AM Took my mother wheeling up in Sedona, decided I need a power steering cooler, and broke my alternator mount.
Brandon 04-18-2005, 09:44 AM robselina, dude that's pretty productive..
Anyway, I just cleared out around my project and got it ready to start - bigger step than it sounds like. Spent the rest of the weekend helpin the wifey get the yard plant ready. I should start to see progress on the scout soon :)
DJForrestA 04-18-2005, 10:25 AM Ordered my lift shackles, Fender flares and new shackle and spring mounts. I'm going to inboard the rear spring perches so I can mount the springs directly under the frame. Blew up to alternator belts. This new 160 amp alternator is too much for V belts. Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep these belts from slipping. I think I may have to covert it to a serpentine belt system. Should be able to fit 38's after these shackles. I've been looking at different tires but still haven't decided. Anyone have recomendations for a 12.5 wide 16.5. Its gotta be at least 36 but no bigger than 38 and no wider than 12.5 and keep in mind it is a daily driver.
crazy4ih 04-18-2005, 12:17 PM I took delivery of this:
http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL164/1025364/1933359/93493299.jpg
73 Scout II, 345 engine. No trans or tcase. It does have an 8-lug ffd60 rear.
http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL164/1025364/1933359/93493223.jpg
It also came with these: FF14b rear, Full width chevy d44front housing with flat tops and 8 lug chevy outers with flat tops, bonz hi-steer arms and flat tops which are already milled, drilled and tappped. And a back full of parts. :flipoff2:
http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL164/1025364/1933359/93493294.jpg
AND

http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL164/1025364/1933359/93493310.jpg
My plans for it are SOA and RS. I am going with the d60 rear and Scout II front with the chevy 8 lug outers, hi-steer. The chevy fullwidth axle with the 8 lug outers and the14b are ~70" wms to wms. I think thats pretty wide and dont like the wheel stick out, otherwise i'd use them. Unless I use H1 Rims. Gonna go with fuel injection for the 345 and 727 with a dodge rear output and jeep d300 tcase. Should be a fun project. Not sure what tires I'll be running. Probabbly 36-37's. :D
ih4ever 04-18-2005, 12:28 PM well i took apart a j#$p 727 and my scout 727 and having the scout one cleaned up and hopefully buying a rebulild kit for it and putting it back together some time soon.
i also grabbed a chevy np 205 and updated it with a divorced ford 205 front output shaft for the 32 spline instead of the chevy 10 it had, now i have a front output w/ a 1350 yoke and and rear w/ a 1330 yoke, :shaking:
tore it down and thats getting cleaned up now and a new rebuild kit for that along with a new 32 spline female input gear for my klune v im putting in :cool2:
Brandon 04-19-2005, 09:44 AM well I beat you all with progress yesterday..
I..
removed one door! Every bolt on my project is rusted and has become one with the body. I had to drill out 4 of them from the body - and so now I have to get them out of that plate, worry bout that later. Removed the top and that's about it :(
MochaMike 04-19-2005, 10:40 AM Rotated the tires on my DD (Dodge Intrepid) while the Scout watched.
harkinoff 04-19-2005, 02:35 PM went wheelin for four days
troutbum 04-19-2005, 03:49 PM where'd ya go and where are the pics?
Sully 04-19-2005, 04:09 PM went wheelin for four days
Shoot, I only spent one day at it, and my junk was broken.
MochaMike 04-19-2005, 05:27 PM removed one door! Every bolt on my project is rusted and has become one with the body. I had to drill out 4 of them from the body - and so now I have to get them out of that plate, worry bout that later. Removed the top and that's about it :(
Welcome to owning an 80.
I had to weld bolts to 18 (out of 24) of the door hinge screws to get them off.
:mad3:
robselina 04-19-2005, 05:44 PM I fought with the doors about 6 months ago and couldn't get the fawkers to budge. Then a couple of weeks ago I just broke out the impact and I think about half came out, a couple rounded off and a couple more broke. Even with drilling a couple out I was done in 20 minutes, not that they'll ever go back on w/o drilling out the broken bolts though and retaping...
Anyway, I'm being long winded but having the right tools makes ALL the difference...
MochaMike 04-19-2005, 06:48 PM Good luck finding fine thread screws that fit those hinges.
I ended up cutting holes in the outside of the doors, removing the old plates (there are plates w/3 holes & some sheetmetal holding them in place).
That was after I broke my tap. :(
I just drilled them out & welded on some nuts to match new course screws I picked up.
rfrankb4 04-19-2005, 09:05 PM Working on getting the screws out of the traveler top still but got the FI on and running well, rust bulleted alot of the rust prone areas, pulled the ydro boost hardware from the jy, and preped the scout for some paint
scoutkid 04-19-2005, 10:16 PM Spent the weekend in Cali... IHOjeff almost had a phone call :flipoff2: working on my new top secret project...

Same with mine. Enough came out that I could put the doors back on, so I was happy about that.
Good luck finding fine thread screws that fit those hinges
I went to evry hardware store I could find in a ten mile radius, and no luck. It would have taken a lot less time if the nut and bolt store had been open on Saturday. The ones I bought take an Allen wrench, but oh well.
Snoopy 04-20-2005, 07:42 AM More detailed pictures on Rusty's buildup, but here's a brief picture-story of what I did on Saturday.
Setup the front axle & suspension.

YellowIH 04-20-2005, 08:17 AM having the right tools makes ALL the difference...
One of the best new tools I have used lately is a step drill bit......IT AWESOME. It is the best new tool I have had in a long time. If you are installing switches in the dash....pass holes in the firewall....redrilling a crossmember for larger bolts....WHATEVER....its a handy tool.
If you don't have one...its a good cheap tool to purchase.
Sully 04-20-2005, 08:40 AM dont know if any of you saw this, someone here said they were wanting one, my mom got it for me!!
 I don't just want one of those. I need one of those for the garage! :cool2:

 Someone's been watching too much American Chopper! I don't think those guys own a single standard drill bit. :flipoff2:
All kidding aside, I picked up one for myself last weekend, and you're right, it is one of my new favorite tools :D
EDIT: 'cause I suxx0rs at teh text sizing.

5lbs sledge? :flipoff2:
JK, I call that an impact, not sure what the real name is. I have one I got at home depot back in the day, but it's been retired since I got the air impact.

What is your opinion on those MAXXIS CREEPY CRAWLERS on that XJ?
So the Bronco didn't go all the way huh?
harkinoff 04-24-2005, 11:45 AM I know they stick good, seen them at the supercrawl on several comp rigs, seem to work nice. I don't know how strong they are though..
The Bronco came up a little more and twisted the nose inse into the dirt and stopped, I thought he was over  We then pushed him back onto his wheels by hand..
