I seem to recall reading that you shouldn't over empty your acetelyne bottle....

How empty can you let it get before you need to refill?

I'd really hate to blow myself up in the garage. That would suck.

You will let the Acetone out which keeps it stable above 15 psi.

the only concern is running more then you should out of the bottle in an hour. and i can't remember how many pounds per hour it is. but, you would have to do a lot of cuttting to get to that stage! if it starts foaming runnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've Never heard that.. They are probably talking about a flashback going back into the tank because of the low pressure...
I just made that up, but it sounds like something a insurance co dreamed up, to give them a out...

i run em near dry all the time, when you have to keep adjusting the torch alot its time to change bottles.

if the flame starts to get a purplish color to it you are burning off the acetone that the acetelyne is stored in, this is bad not only will they charge you a bundle to put new acetone in it will eat the lines. the stop point is basically where the high pressure gauge bottoms out, you won't blow yourself up, acetylene in unstable above 15psi, thats why it is stored in a dissolved state (whatever you call being stored in another liquid) run em till you think you are out then get em filled, the few bucks you may lose each time in unused gas is worth the safty and piece of mind.

Use map gas :) That is what I am going to use when ever I get around to swapping out my propane tank.

Yep, mytzflick hit it right on the head...its just a matter of pulling the acetone out...that is also what happens if you pull too much per hour...but in order to pull too much per hour you would have to have multiple setups off one tank...like in a school or maybe like some types of shops do:D:D:D

Ok then. Purple flame = bad. I've got about 75 psi in the tank, and was trying to figure out how low I could run it.

Thanks.

don't worry about it at all run it till it quits. I've seen hundreds of bottles emptied that way!

Yep,
Purple flame = Time to fill
I've seen hundreds of bottles emptied completly too, I've also seen hoses go to hell long before they should.

BTW, a BIG rosebud tip can eat enougth gas out of a small bottle to create problems, but you have to be doing major 'smithing to eat that much.

So far, I've only used the cutting tip to cut (duh) and heat stuck bolts... Guess I've still got a weekend to two's worth of gas.
